The Elizabeth Warren Native American ancestry debate, explained

WASHINGTON DC- MARCH 01 U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren arrives at a confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee

In a series of tweets Tuesday morning, Trump called her a "complete and total fraud" and called for her to apologize. But she appeared to concede a main line of criticism from Native American leaders - that sovereign tribal groups determine citizenship and cultural lineage, not DNA tests such as the one she took.

Cherokee Nation responded to the results of Warren's test on Monday, arguing that "Warren is undermining tribal interests with her continued claims of tribal heritage".

Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr. said in a statement that DNA tests are not evidence to be used to lay a claim to any tribe.

These claims were echoed by Donald Trump, who most notably called Mrs Warren "Pocahontas", which has been regarded a racial slur. But it strongly supported the existence of an unadmixed Native American ancestor in her pedigree from six to 10 generations ago. Trump has dubbed her "Pocahontas" for months and she has been accused of claiming minority status to advance her career.

"I'll only do it if I can test her personally. Even they don't want her. Phony!".

Still, Republicans generally, and Trump specifically, have seized on Warren's claims of indigenous ancestry to paint her as a fraud and opportunist.

"Pocahontas (the bad version), sometimes referred to as Elizabeth Warren, is getting slammed", Trump tweeted Tuesday morning.

MJ Akbar resigns amid #MeToo controversy
Will the usual slew of intimidation tactics scare women into silence? "We can't lose this battle". The government has remained silent while Mr Akbar was attending a conference in Nigeria.

Warren acknowledged in a tweet Monday that DNA and family history have nothing to do with tribal affiliation or citizenship, which is determined by tribal nations. "I respect the distinction, & don't list myself as Native in the Senate", Warren said.

Warren tweeted that Trump is a "cowardly elitist" and that she "won't sit quietly for Trump's racism" so she took the test. On Monday, Trump said he would pay up, but only if he "can test her personally". "This is not something I would enjoy doing either".

"It makes a mockery out of DNA tests and its legitimate uses while also dishonoring legitimate tribal governments and their citizens, whose ancestors are well documented and whose heritage is proven", he said.

As for Who Cares?, The Daily Show's Trevor Noah has a pretty terrific response - watch it below - but first, a recap of the recent back-and-forths between Trump and Warren. "It may soothe his ego - but it won't work".

At a rally in July, Trump said: "And we will say, 'I will give you a million dollars, paid for by Trump, to your favorite charity if you take the test and it shows you're an Indian ... we'll see what she does".

She fired back at Trump within minutes: "You've lost a step, and in 21 days, you're going to lose Congress".

Warren was referring to the November 6 election, when Democrats hope to regain control of the House, which would put them in position to examine and possibly publicly release Trump's returns.
