YouTube outage across the world company says working on resolving issue

The online video streaming service YouTube is up and running again after an outage lasting nearly two hours.

There's been a steady stream of comments on social media sites tonight asking why YouTube is not working worldwide.

Global video streaming service YouTube suffered an outage Wednesday morning that lasted more than an hour.

YouTube said on Twitter that it is working on the problem but did not explain what happened. "We apologize for any inconvenience".

Representatives for YouTube and Google did not immediately respond to a request for more information.

The company said it was investigating the issue, before reporting it had been fixed nearly 90 minutes later.

UPDATE 4.02pm: YouTube is back up and running after users around the world reported having issues with the site. (Supplied) Millions of users were met with a blank screen or "server error" messages when they try to access YouTube.

While most users are familiar with 404 - page not found - error message 503 means "service unavailable".

Meanwhile, about 80 minutes later, Team YouTube said: "We're back!"

YouTube is an American video-sharing website headquartered in San Bruno, California.

Google Trends provides a snapshot of how people began searching video sites Dailymotion and Vimeo during YouTube's blackout.
