Nintendo Switch sales top 22.86 million, overtaking the GameCube

Nintendo Switch sales top 22.86 million, overtaking the GameCube

Those strong sales continue and the latest victim is Nintendo's sixth-generation games console, the GameCube.

Despite that, the Wall Street Journal reports that Nintendo chief executive Shuntaro Furukawa said during a press conference that the Switch's momentum is in line with what the company expected and that it still believes it can hit its goal of 20 million Switch sold during this fiscal year. The company said that it sold 5.07 million Switch consoles in the six months ended September 30, up 3.7% compared to Switch sales in the same period in 2017. While this might sound like a near-impossible task, it's worth noting that Switch sales are actually slightly up year-on-year despite a relative lack of first-party major releases over the last few months, and the upcoming Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! and Super Smash Bros.

As for the future, Nintendo still wants to hit a target of 20 million additional Switch's sold for the fiscal year: 13 million more than last year. You can look at these figures yourself over on Nintendo's official financial report page. The company announced today that they have sold 22.86 million Switch consoles as of the end of September 2018. Super Mario Odyssey has sold over 12.17 million units in its first full year. The company's 5.07 million units sold for the first half of this fiscal is up from 4.89 million for the same period a year ago.

For the year to March, it maintained its optimistic annual targets, expecting a net profit of 165 billion yen on sales of 1.2 trillion yen. The Wii U was a dud and sold just 11 million units during its lifetime.

Operating profit in the July-September quarter was 30.9 billion yen (about $275 million), up from 23.8 billion yen a year ago.
