Pause for thought: Apple's 2018 Mac Mini

Apple mac mini 2018

Apple says it's five times faster than previous Mac Minis-which were last updated in 2014.

At Apple's event in New York City, the company took the wraps off a revamped Mac Mini, replacing its underpowered parts with new, 8th generation Intel quad- and 6-core processors options, up to 64GB of memory, up to a 2TB SSD, a T2 security chip, 10GB ethernet, and four Thunderbolt 3 ports. It also features an HDMI 2.0 port, two USB-A ports, an audio jack and a 10 Gigabit Ethernet, so it can connect to nearly anything. The graphics performance has also been boosted and the new Mac mini is 60% more powerful when it comes to graphically-intensive tasks than its predecessor. The Mac mini like its laptop cousin is also the first in its series to be made out of 100 percent recycled aluminium that gives it a smaller carbon footprint - almost 50 percent less than the previous generation.

It starts at $799 in the U.S., £799 in the United Kingdom, runs Mac OS Mojave from the get-go and will be available from 7 November. It will be available in Apple retail stores and through Apple Authorized Resellers starting Wednesday, November 7. Additionally, consumers can configure the Mac Mini with up to 64GB of RAM and up to 4TB of solid-state storage. You can pre-order one now. This is compared to the base model, which costs $799 United States dollars, sporting only 8GB of RAM, 128GB SSD storage, and a quad-core Intel Core i3 processor.

To keep the mini cool, Apple has redesigned the power supply, added a bigger fan, and expanded vents increasing airflow twofold.
