Private messages from 81000 hacked Facebook accounts for sale

The same hackers also published basic data from 176,000 accounts more including email addresses and phone numbers, and claim to have information on up to 120 million accounts in total. Our database includes 120 million accounts, with the ability to sample by specific countries.

Facebook maintains that its services haven't suffered any security breach, but this data has been obtained via malicious extensions. "Malicious extensions can be used to intercept and manipulate the data passing through the browser", Holland said.

Facebook is back in the limelight with another alleged data breach, and this time users' personal messages shared on the platform are claimed to have been compromised.

In response to the story, Facebook executive Guy Rosen told the BBC that the company has "Contacted browser-makers to ensure that known malicious extensions are no longer available to download in their stores", and "Have also contacted law enforcement and have worked with local authorities to remove the website that displayed information from Facebook accounts".

"Browsers like Chrome can be very secure, but browser extensions can introduce serious gaps in their armour".

Two stabbed at Sony Music's London headquarters, man arrested
The victim was taken to a south London hospital with stab wounds and was pronounced dead at 8.15pm, the Metropolitan Police said. As-yet-unconfirmed reports said there was a fight between two staff inside the Sony building.

The BBC says it contacted 5 users (from Moscow, Belgorod and Perm) affected by the breach, who all confirmed that the texts available online were indeed their private Facebook messages. But as you'd expect, there are also more sensitive discussions, including "intimate correspondence between two lovers", as the BBC describes it.

According to The Information, Facebook is in talks to buy a major cybersecurity company to help protect users. This hack apparently has nothing to do with the most recent hack of Facebook data that was widely publicised in September.

Independent cyber-experts have told the BBC that if rogue extensions were indeed the cause, the browsers' developers might share some responsibility for failing to vet the programs, assuming they were distributed via their marketplaces.

While the data leak might not be entirely Facebook's fault, in the wake of Cambridge Analytica scandal it surely sounds like a bad news for Facebook.
