Trump eyes asylum limits for caravans; would they be legal?

Trump said Thursday he plans to end the practice of catch and release through an executive order, and will make it a requirement that asylum-seekers must come to an official port of entry.

"Those who choose to break our laws and enter illegally will no longer be able to use meritless claims to gain automatic admission into our country", he said, indicating he'd sign an executive order to change the policy. Immigration advocates contend this would violate current law, which allows anyone entering the country to apply for asylum no matter how they arrived. Earlier in the week, the administration said it would send thousands of troops to the border; on Thursday, Trump said these troops could treat migrants who throw rocks as if they were using firearms.

Trump also said this week he would seek to scrap the constitutional right of citizenship for USA -born children of non-citizens and illegal immigrants. One group got into a violent confrontation with Mexican police at the border with Guatemala, throwing rocks. Trump has characterized it as an "invasion" of migrants. "They do that with us they're going to be arrested for a very long time".

The second caravan, also of about 1,000 to 1,500 people, is now in Mapastepec, Chiapas.

His announcement marked Trump's latest attempt to keep the issue of immigration front-and-center in the final stretch before next Tuesday's elections. But the timing of this deployment and the questionable need for it, with the caravan at least a month away from the border with Mexico and diminishing in size, have led many former military officers to deliver their harshest criticisms yet of Trump.

The caravan, one of three trekking through Mexico to the US, contains around 4,000 people - down from a peak of more than 7,000. In the meantime, these troops will fill in the gaps and form a human wall to help border agents handle the crisis along our 2,000-mile southern border. Mexico's Interior Department said Thursday almost 3,000 of the migrants have applied for refuge in Mexico and hundreds more have returned home. "I didn't say shoot".

I was just sitting at home in California minding my own business but I could not stop thinking about what's going on down here. The bishop also said, "If you're going to address people based on their color only, I think it's pretty sad".

On another immigration front, Trump said this week he would seek to scrap the constitutional right of citizenship for US -born children of non-citizens and illegal immigrants, saying he would issue an executive order on so-called birthright citizenship.

TRUMP: "President Obama separated the children from parents and nobody complained. It's the military. I hope there won't be that", he said.

He also did not clarify how he wants to detain asylum-seekers, but hinted that he wants to build tent cities and "we're going to hold them right there" without providing details.

However, DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen insisted the 2018 election cycle was "going to be the most secure election we've ever had".

"The people in the caravan have walked for weeks under the rain and sun from Central America, where they left their houses and families; they were forced to leave their countries due to the violence, death and hunger", the letter reads.

If he follows through on that promise, iIt would be the largest domestic deployment of active duty military in modern American history, and eclipse the number of troops now stationed in Iraq. Even Fox News, which serves as a bullhorn for the President's thinly-disguised racist broadsides, carried an op-ed saying "Trump should fix our immigration system - Not spread fear of immigrants".
