Andrew Lincoln to star in 3 'Walking Dead' movies

The Walking Dead season 9 spoilers Secrets behind Negan and Rick Grimes's chat REVEALED

Walking Dead director Rosemary Rodriguez shared a selfie of her and Lincoln on set.

The announcement comes after this week's episode, which saw Rick seemingly mortally wounded and sent off by the helicopter that Jadis has previously been in contact with, sent to an unknown locale.

If you haven't been keeping up with The Walking Dead and don't want it spoiled for you then you're free to click out now. As well as seeing Lincoln reprise his role as Rick, the features will also star Pollyanna McIntosh as Jadis/Anne, who played a pivotal role in Rick's final moments on episode five of season nine of the show. Shooting a movie for two or three months is far easier, schedule-wise, than basically living in Atlanta for most of the year to shoot The Walking Dead.

But The Walking Dead movies are just the start.

Last season brought the culmination of "All Out War", which pitted Rick Grimes and his group of survivors against the Saviors and their cunning leader, Negan.

As reported by Deadline, the Rick Grimes movies are among the first films in development from Gimple as part of a multi-year plan for THE WALKING DEAD UNIVERSE, which also includes other projects now in the works: additional films, specials, series, digital content and more.

Production on the movies is expected to begin as early as 2019. In fact, it's going to be a "large, big scope movie that will feel like a major motion picture". The series is executive produced by chief content officer Scott M. Gimple, showrunner Angela Kang, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert, Greg Nicotero, Tom Luse and Denise Huth. The first film will explore the story of where Rick is taken and what he faces in a new corner of the zombie apocalypse.

He said: "There were story ideas brewing that, as the years went on, seemed very compatible with continuing to tell the Rick story in another format that would allow him time with his family". I mean - no, look, I mean every day that I'm with my family and I see my children's faces I know it's the right decision.

'It is about who he is and who he's going to be - and certainly how he deals with the situation he's in, ' Gimple added.
