Raheem Sterling strikes twice as Manchester City go top with Southampton rout

Pep Guardiola- Pep Guardiola said he had never told any player on any team to deliberately foul opponents

Cardiff City were many people's tip for an instant return to the Championship - and though manager Neil Warnock has been happy with his sides effort, passion and commitment - it already looks like a long season ahead.

Raheem Sterling hopes to give Manchester City fans plenty more reason to chant his name after starring in Sunday's demolition of Southampton.

Six minutes later and City were 2-0 up after Bernardo Silva fed Sterling on the right and the England winger's low cross was slotted home from close range by Sergio Aguero, the Argentine's 17th goal in his last 13 home games.

"We spoke about that and said "try to score goals".

Demarai Gray, a member of the Leicester squad that won the Premier League in 2016, scored the only goal of the game, revealing a T-shirt that read "For Khun Vichai" before he was mobbed by his teammates.

With a crucial period in Tottenham Hotspur's season looming large, the last thing manager Mauricio Pochettino needed was more injury worries.

"I thought it was a great team performance, not just with the ball".

"I have the feeling he is now enjoying scoring goals and making assists".

One goal became two six minutes later as the division's highest scorers went through the gears, with Aguero tapping in at the back post for his landmark 150th Premier League goal following some good work from Sterling.

City were rampant against Saints and all but wrapped up the game inside the opening 18 minutes.

It probably says more about Southampton's defending than it does about City's attack, though, to be fair.

It was a rare mistake from goalkeeper Ederson that led to the Saints goal, the Brazilian diving unnecessarily at the feet of Danny Ings and tripping the forward, who convincingly shot home the penalty.

"The first season, he was scared, he was looking, who is the guy I am going to pass the ball to?", he told BBC Football.

Sane was one of five different goalscorers for City on Sunday, and he has now scored three times in just four starts.

Sane completed the rout with a sixth in the closing minutes, picking out the bottom-left corner from the edge of the box after being found on the break by Sterling.
