Former Professional Referee Has His Say On That Owen Farrell Tackle

Even the All Blacks stand off when Marx has the ball

England got their autumn series off to a winning start at Twickenham with a hard-fought 12-11 victory over South Africa, but the main talking point was Farrell's "no-arms" tackle on Esterhuizen in the dying seconds of the game.

But there was drama right at the end when, with 80 minutes on the clock, referee Angus Gardner consulted the television match official to see if fly-half Farrell had committed an illegal "no-arms" tackle on Springbok replacement Andre Esterhuizen.

Farrell was not cited for the incident.

Citing commissioner Keith Brown had until 24 hours after the final whistle to trigger disciplinary action, but decided the challenge did not meet the required threshold of being a red-card offence.

England supplied the largest contingent of players to the 2017 Lions tour and upon their return, Eddie Jones requested suggestions from the likes of Owen Farrell and Maro Itoje on how the All Blacks could be beaten. He says Gardner incorrectly used the fact that Kruis "dipped" into the tackle as a mitigating factor, suggesting the referee on more than one occasion did not follow World Rugby protocols.

Jonathan Kaplan, a former global referee from South Africa declared Gardner made the wrong decision, adding that Farrell's "arm wrapping around is an afterthought".

Liverpool could have easily beaten Arsenal - Robertson
Arsenal responded and finally got a deserved equaliser through Alexandre Lacazette late in the game, much to Leno's relief. But also, we need the regularity of every match and the next match against Wolverhampton here, is the same.

"It went to the touch judge, he said "check" and then it all slows down". Because you guys (the media) want to sack me, is that why? "It was a legal hit". He said: 'Our boys who played for the Lions made notes about what they felt worked and what they felt didn't work.

"It can look bad in real time, but when you slow it down it's a chest shot".

Handre Pollard had the chance to win it for South Africa late on but he pushed his effort and watched on as it kissed the right-hand post.

It was Farrell's kick in the 73rd minute that sealed the win.

England were again grateful for another stray delivery from Marx, but it was only a matter of time before the visitors regained the lead and it was Nkosi who scored the opening try in the corner after more excellent work from the dominant Springboks forwards. "We didn't give", Jones said.
