Democrats retake US House, Republicans keep Senate

Two other sources close to the White House said that Trump is already blaming retiring House Speaker Paul Ryan for what the President's team is billing as a bad night.

If Democrats do win enough House seats to reclaim the majority, Trump will be forced to deal with a shift in the balance of power in Washington. A Republican-led Senate would allow Trump's conservative remaking of the US judiciary to continue.

In Georgia, Stacey Abrams, 44, the former minority leader of the state House of Representatives, is running for governor against Republican Brian Kemp, the 55-year-old Georgia secretary of state. Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum is narrowly trailing his challenger Rep. Ron DeSantis. I don't care what they say.

Going into election day, the Democrats needed a net gain of 23 seats to take over a majority in the House, and polling indicated that they stood an excellent chance of doing that.

Expected Democratic chairs of the House Oversight Committee and Judiciary Committee were quick to preview their plans, including likely investigations into the president's tax returns and sources of income overseas, his policy of separating families from their immigrant parents at the border, his appointment of family members to senior positions, his coziness with donors, and his relationship with Moscow.

Democrats also could recapture governorships in several battleground states such as Michigan, Wisconsin and OH, a potential help for the party in those states in the 2020 presidential race. In Colorado, Democrat Jared Polis becamethe nation's first openly gay governor.

In the race for the Senate, Republicans picked up two seats, defeating Sen.

Republican Mike Braun opened an early lead in the crucial Senate showdown in IN with incumbent Democrat Joe Donnelly, but the race was too close to call with just 20 percent of the votes in. Last week, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi predicted it would happen.

One race involving a woman is seen as a potential bellwether for how the day may go.

Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith and Democrat Mike Espy advanced to a November 27 runoff election.

They also had a moment of silence for Allen and had the "12 Flag" that's raised before every game lowered to half-staff. White was selected by the Chargers in the fourth round in last April's draft and played in the first three games.

Republicans were banking on those dynamics being offset by a vibrant economy and by a president whose insult-laden approach to political discourse was as stirring for conservative voters as it was infuriating to liberals.

"New York will once again be a progressive beacon as Democrats continue to build the blue wall of resistance against Washington Republicans' extremist agenda", she added. Republicans entered the night in control of 33 governor's mansions, compared to 16 for the Democrats.

The outcome of the midterms will also mark the culmination of a bitter partisan battle for control of Congress and set the stage for the 2020 elections, where an expansive field of Democratic presidential candidates is expected to challenge Trump after his first term in office. But Pelosi brushed off such comparisons Tuesday, arguing that Clinton won the popular vote, and was handicapped by the Electoral College, which won't be a factor in House races.

"If the Democrats really believe that this President is controlled by Russian Federation, then why do they say nothing about it?"

"I believe he values immigration, but he wants to make sure we're safe", said Tina Newby of Wetland, Michigan, a GOP voter. Yet it may be effective in largely rural states where he remains popular and where numerous closest Senate races are playing out. And a ballot initiative in Florida to restore voting rights to convicted felons passed.

In North Carolina, election officials blamed "high humidity" for some voting machines being unable to read ballots. Two-thirds of voters said that they decided how to vote before the last month of the election. A CBS News exit poll offers some clues.

While the economy continues to thrive, Trump has spent much of the campaign's final days railing against a caravan of Latin American immigrants seeking asylum at the U.S. border. The federal government warned of active campaigns by Russian Federation and other nations to disrupt the elections.

Party strategists will have their eyes on four US House races this hour: Arizona's 2nd District, Colorado's 6th District, and Minnesota 2nd and 6th Districts. That's partly because California has abandoned some polling places in favor of mail-in ballots, which take longer to count.

Tuesday's elections also tested the strength of a Trump-era political realignment defined by evolving divisions among voters by race, gender, and especially education.
