Trainer Aidan O'Brien Confirms Horse The Cliffsofmoher Died During Melbourne Cup

F-k the Cup: Pub boycotts traditional celebrations for Melbourne Cup

The Cliffsofmoher suffered a fractured right shoulder and had to be euthanised.

"This was an unfortunate incident that happens infrequently, with Victoria having one of the best safety records in world racing", a Racing Victoria statement read.

Speaking to media prior to the race, McEvoy revealed that he had promised his kids a swimming pool and his wife a house if he took out a third Melbourne Cup, and now he is set to stay true to his word.

He first tried to win the Melbourne Cup back in 1988, and through the Godolphin royal blue colours since 1998.

"Cliffsofmoher, he's melting like an ice-cream at the moment", Seven commentator Richard Freedman said.

But it was also noted in the coverage that the horse frequently did this before races, including when he ran without incident last start in the Caulfield Cup to finish third.

Sportsbet on Tuesday said Perth punters were favouring favourites Magic Circle ($7), Yucatan ($7) and Marmelo ($13) but also had a soft spot for the outsiders.

The Flemington track was lashed with up to 50mm of rain on the morning of the Melbourne Cup, but was the subject of two track upgrades later in the day as the sun broke through intermittently.

The Cliffsofmoher pulled up lame about 600m into the 3200m race, dropping back in the pack and eventually coming to a stop.

Red Cadeaux died in 2015 a fortnight after sustaining an injury during the Melbourne Cup. He was treated by vets for three weeks after the race, but was eventually euthanised.

Lat year Regal Monarch was put down after he fell during the final stretch of the race.

"Unfortunately these things can happen galloping around the fields at home and it's very sad", O'Brien said.

McEvoy was one of five jockeys to be fined - in his case A$3,000 (£1,650) - for breaching the whip rules.

The horse was put down as a result of the injuries sustained.
