Boeing Warning Provides New Clues Into Lion Air 737 Max Crash

Lion Air crash Black box reveals plane had airspeed problems on final four flights

The sensor had malfunctioned on four previous flights of the Lion Air aircraft and was replaced the day before the October 29 crash, according to Indonesian aviation officials.

The sensor - which helps the plane's computers determine if its nose is too high in the air - had been the cause of problems on the aircraft's last four flights before the crash.

"To underscore our commitment to safety, Southwest is issuing communication to highlight the existing procedures to Southwest pilots that operate our 737 Max 8 fleet", the company said.

An overview of the 737 MAX flight manual revision being issued by the FAA. If the flow is disrupted by a plane going too slow or climbing too steeply, that can cause an aerodynamic stall and a plane will plummet.

The committee has said they were dealing with an "erroneous airspeed indication".

Airline safety experts said pilots are trained to handle a plane safely if those crucial sensors fail and backup systems are generally in place as well.

An angle of attack sensor had been changed by mechanics on the ground in Bali the day before the crash, Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) has said.

There are also procedures for pilots to follow in the event of missing data from damaged sensors on the fuselage, but it remained unclear how much time the crew of flight JT610 had to respond at the relatively low altitude of around 5,000 feet.

The Lion Air jetliner plunged into the Java Sea minutes after takeoff from Jakarta airport, nosing downward so suddenly that it may have hit speeds of 600 miles an hour before slamming into the water.

Indonesia's transport ministry has scheduled a briefing at 12:30 p.m.in Jakarta on Wednesday to share updated information on the Lion Air accident, Bloomberg reports.

Boeing said it is cooperating fully and providing technical assistance as the investigation continues.

Industry insiders said that the completion of the Zhoushan plant, announced amid ongoing China-US trade frictions, reflects US companies' heavy dependence on both the supply chain in China as well as the country's huge market. "The big picture is the system keeps getting safer and safer, and it's still the safest form of transportation ever designed by humans", he said. The system alerts pilots if it senses a possible malfunction.

An Air Canada Boeing 737 MAX 8 (C-FSJH) single-aisle narrow-body jet airliner airborne on short final approach for landing at Vancouver International Airport, Richmond, B.C. on Wednesday, August 29, 2018.

"Whenever appropriate, Boeing, as part of its usual processes, issues bulletins or makes recommendations regarding the operation of its aircraft".

"The pilots can use extra force to correct the nose down trim, but the failure condition repeats itself, so that the nose-down push begins again 10 seconds after correcting", reported The Seattle Times.
