Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wins election to New York’s 14th congressional district

The Associated Press reported that a record 237 women ran for the House of Representatives this year.

(5) Cindy Hyde-Smith won a plurality in MS and is heavily favored to win her runoff election to become the first woman ever elected to the US Senate from her state.

Boston City Councilwoman Ayanna Pressley will represent Massachusetts' 7th Congressional District in the next Congress.

A former National Teacher of the Year, Jahana Hayes, will become Connecticut's first black woman in Congress. Newcomer Ayanna Pressley of MA who ousted a 10-term incumbent in the primary will become the first black congresswoman from MA.

Women now hold 96 out of the 435 House of Representative seats, a record number set on Tuesday night.

Going into the midterm elections, 19 per cent of the Governor, Senate and House seats were held by women.

Mills, now the state's attorney general, has won the governorship, checking another state off a long list that has never had a female chief executive.

She ran alongside Republican Rep. Ron DeSantis, who beat Democrat Andrew Gillum in a high profile race that was one of the most closely watched nationally.
