A phone and a tablet- Samsung reveals foldable smartphone

Samsung Electronics CEO and president DJ Koh

Samsung revealed - or semi-revealed - their new prototype handset at their Developers' Conference in San Francisco. It also has a smaller 4.6-inch “cover display”.

"This device is very much a first-generation product", he said.

The unfolded screen of the upcoming phone is bigger than Samsung's biggest smartphone, the Note9, which is 6.4 inches, and the iPhone XS Max at 6.5 inches.

The main screen of the Samsung foldable comes with a 4.2:3 aspect ratio and the cover a 21:9 aspect ratio.

Samsung, which makes iPhone OLED displays, will get us even closer if that Infinity-O screen prediction turns out to be accurate. Then at SDC18 on Wednesday, Samsung confirmed that it's indeed making displays with holes at the top - Apple, by the way, also has a patent on tech that allows manufacturers to drill holes through screens, which may be a telling detail for the future of its hardware. They said alien civilisations may jettison used cargo ships, resulting in space debris that looks a lot like Asteroid 'Oumuamua. An artist's depiction of Oumuamua, an interstellar object that astronomers believe is a comet, not an asteroid .

Samsung and Huawei have been vying to be the world's first developer of a foldable smartphone.

As for the OLED display, Samsung says that it can withstand being folded 200,000 times, which corresponds to approximately 55 times per day for 10 years.

She said Royole told her the issues were "due to the adhesive used in the engineering samples".

Developer Joshua Clark, who was at the conference, said Samsung needs to sell the technology to its competitors for the product to be widely adopted.

Other companies: Google has started working on foldable devices, too, The Verge reports.
