Democrats seek emergency hearings on Trump’s ouster of Jeff Sessions

It's been less than 24 hours since ex-Attorney General Jeff Sessions was booted from the Trump administration, and he's already mulling a political comeback, Politico reported.

Trump told associates that he felt that Whitaker would be "loyal" and would not have recused himself from the Russian Federation probe as Sessions had done, according to two Republicans close to the White House not authorized to speak publicly about private conversations.

One associate, Jerome Corsi, said in a video recording Monday that he's "been involved in a really constant basis" for two months with Mueller's investigation.

As for the reports on Trump, if Whitaker suppresses them, the House Judiciary Committee could subpoena them and make them public.

While speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Conway explained President Trump is not planning to use the resignation as a way to shut down the Mueller probe.

Sessions told the president in a one-page letter that he was submitting his resignation "at your request".

Donald Trump has installed a crony to oversee the special counsel's Trump-Russia investigation, crossing a red line set to protect the investigation.

CBS News has learned former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is being considered to replace Jeff Sessions as attorney general.

Asked whether Whitaker would take control of the Russian Federation probe, Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said, "The acting attorney general is in charge of all matters under the purview of the Department of Justice". US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer shortly after the news broke said in a statement that Whitaker in his new role should recuse himself from overseeing Mueller's investigation.

Democrats pick up more seats after taking control of House
The ties between the two men, who are said to communicate frequently, could come under increased scrutiny by Democrats. The president may say he wants "unity and peace and love" - but it's clear it will have to be on his terms.

Earlier, at a White House news conference, Trump said the Mueller investigation was not good for the United States.

One is simply by declining to continue to pay the investigators or attorneys working for the special counsel.

Other Democratic congressional leaders, including House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and Senate Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Mark Warner issued almost identical tweets urging Whitaker to recuse himself from the Russian Federation investigation, citing his vocal criticism of the probe.

"Sessions was the worst attorney general in modern American history".

Some Democrats also considered Sessions too eager to do Trump's bidding and overly receptive to his grievances.

Both Whitaker and Clovis are rooted in Iowa politics, and both ran for the 2014 Republican Senate nomination.

He found satisfaction in being able to reverse Obama-era policies that conservatives say flouted the will of Congress, encouraging prosecutors to pursue the most serious charges they could and promoting more aggressive enforcement of federal marijuana law. "He has no reason to recuse himself", Malcolm told VOA.

His agenda unsettled liberals who said that Sessions' focus on tough prosecutions marked a return to failed drug war tactics that unduly hurt minorities and the poor, and that his rollbacks of protections for gay and transgender people amount to discrimination. "I just know what I've read and that he was critical in the past of the special counsel's investigations, which obviously raises concerns", King said.

Democratic Representative Jerrold Nadler, expected to chair the House Judiciary Committee starting in January, said removing Sessions fit Trump's pattern of interfering in the work of the Justice Department and Mueller.
