Google Canada manager shares 'frustration' of workers who walked out

Google Ends Forced Arbitration After Protest Over Sex MisconductMore

"We demand a truly equitable culture", organizer Stephanie Parker wrote in response to Pichai's November 8 email, "and Google leadership can achieve this by putting employee representation on the board and giving full rights and protections to contract workers, our most vulnerable workers, many of whom are Black and Brown women".

Arbitration of harassment claims will be optional instead of obligatory, according to Pichai, a move that could end anonymous settlements that fail to identify those accused of harassment.

(He does not address discrimination claims.) The company will also begin providing more detailed information about the process and outcomes in sexual harassment investigations.

The company later said that over the past two years, 48 other employees - including 13 considered to be senior staff - had been fired over sexual harassment issues.

It followed a series of revelations about sexual harassment and misconduct at the company, including a $90m payout to Android inventor Andy Rubin after he had left Google, despite what the firm considered a credible claim of sexual misconduct against him - a claim he denies.

"This is an area where we need to continually make progress and are committed to doing so", Pichai said while detailing the comprehensive action plan to address the demands of the Google employees. The company will also provide more support to employees who report, including counseling and allowing them to bring a companion with them during HR investigations.

It will be up to team leaders to take steps to curb excessive drinking among their teams, Google said, noting that further actions will be taken if problems persist.

More Epic Events are in the works as well featuring Epic Mercenaries and Epic Ships, for those over level 30. With the next update to the game, Ubisoft is adding customizable controls for gamepad on all platforms.

The global walkout spread to many countries in Europe, North America and Asia, including Britain, Singapore, Japan, Germany, and Google's headquarters in Mountain View in northern California.

Employees who organized last week's demonstrations estimated that 20,000 workers participated across Alphabet offices in five continents.

Geremia says the anger of those who walked out highlights that more women and minorities are needed in tech, but that need isn't unique to the sector.

Pichai outlined the changes, which align with some of the demands put forward by protesters.

Pichai sent out an email to all Google employees this morning, and in the sake of trying to be more transparent with the public on these matters, shared it in the form of a blog post for everyone to see.

The Google protest organizers last week demanded an end to forced arbitration, a single system for anonymously reporting harassment and a promise that the chief diversity officer would report directly to the CEO.

"They all have the same root cause, which is a concentration of power and a lack of accountability at the top", Parker said.
