Boeing jet crash lands at Guyana airport leaving six people injured

A Fly Jamaica Boeing 757-200 aircraft has overshot the runway at Guyana's main global airport, injuring several people.

The plane, which had 120 passengers and eight crew members on board, had been in the air for about 20 minutes when the pilot indicated it was experiencing problems with its hydraulic system, Guyana officials said at a news conference.

St. Lucia News was reporting that six people were injured in the incident, but were stable and being treated at the Diamond Regional Hospital in Georgetown.

Among those on board were 35 Guyanese, 82 Canadians, one American citizen, a Trinidadian and one Pakistani.

Of that number, six persons received minor injuries.

In 2011, a Caribbean Airlines jet carrying 163 people crashed as it landed at the Guyana airport, injuring several passengers.

Images posted on the airport's Facebook page showed the nose of the Fly Jamaica Airways plane resting against a perimeter fence.

"One of the wings came apart and the engine on the right side actually flipped over and we crashed into a big sand pile at the edge of a cliff".

The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority is leading an investigation and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, which automatically assists with inquiries under worldwide rules, was notified, officials said.

Fly Jamaica Flight 256 headed back to the Guyanan capital Georgetown because of a technical problem, the airline said in a statement on its website, adding that it believes all 118 passengers and 8 crew members are safe. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) of the United States has been informed as well. A spokesman said consular assistance would be available to those who needed it.
