Florida Senate, governor's races head for recount

All Eyes on Florida's Gubernatorial Race: Will Florida Go Blue?

Recounts will take place in Florida, ordered by the secretary of state, in the Senate race between Nelson and Rick Scott, as well as for the agriculture commissioner race.

The updated numbers showed Scott with 4,074,001 votes, or 50.21 percent, while Democratic incumbent Bill Nelson had 4,039,498 votes, or 49.79 percent.

In Riviera Beach, the Palm Beach County Canvassing Board met Friday morning to review "anomalous" ballots not yet counted because of irregularities that prevented a machine-reading.

Both Nelson and Scott had observers watching Sarasota County's provisional ballot count, with Democratic state Rep. Margaret Good representing Nelson and newly elected Sarasota County Commissioner Christian Ziegler representing Scott.

Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., exits the Senate subway en route to a vote on Capitol Hill, June 20, 2018.

Richard, a Tallahassee lawyer, had represented George W. Bush during Florida's 2000 presidential recount, which spanned 36 days and resulted in Bush capturing Florida and with it, the White House, by 537 votes out of nearly 6 million cast. In 2016, there were 24,460 provisional ballots submitted, with 10,998 ballots ultimately being counted, according to the Florida Division of Elections.

Scott declared victory late Tuesday and Nelson's campaign expressed disappointment with the results as returns showed the governor holding a more substantial edge. A 0.25-point vote margin prompts a more thorough manual recount.

In the race for governor, DeSantis was leading by 0.47 percentage points. Nelson's team said it's preparing for a recount and will have observers in every one of the state's 67 counties to monitor the process.

Gillum's campaign said Thursday that he is "ready for any outcome", including a recount.

Nelson lawyer Marc Elias said Scott was using his official position to try to influence the election.

The Florida gubernatorial race isn't over yet.

Trump Administration Moves to Restrict Asylum at US-Mexico Border
President Donald Trump has blamed US asylum rules for luring thousands of migrants a year from Central American countries. Mr Trump is expected to sign a proclamation on Friday introducing what would be a major step to restrict asylum claims .

Florida's chief legal officer, Secretary of State Ken Detzner, told county election supervisors Thursday to plan for as many as three statewide recounts and for extraordinary public and media scrutiny in the state with the singular status of unusually close elections.

Scott was term limited as governor of Florida.

"No ragtime group of liberal activists or lawyers from DC will be allowed to steal this election from the voters in this great state", Scott said in a press conference where he announced his voter fraud lawsuit against Broward County Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes for the county's slow-going absentee ballot counting.

"They're finding votes out of nowhere, and Rick Scott who won by - it was close, but he won by a comfortable margin, he easily won but every hour it seems to be going down", Trump said outside the White House Friday.

He conceded to Republican Ron DeSantis on Tuesday night, though the margin of the race has since tightened.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) has raised concern about two Florida counties that are still counting votes two days after the November 6 election.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has said they are not investigating, that no allegations of fraud have been brought forward and there has been no written request from Scott yet.

A spokesman for Governor Scott criticised the move as a "desperate" attempt to cling onto power.

Under state law, a recount is required when candidates are within one-half point when all the votes are counted. "They are asking courts to overrule election officials and accept ballots that were not legally cast".

But Elias said showing identification increases the chances that the ballots will be counted.

In Miami-Dade, only provisional and overseas ballots remained uncounted. "We recognize that we didn't win this tonight".
