Garcia sets pace at Sun City with faultless 64

Sergio Garcia leads the Nedbank Golf Challenge by four shots after posting a superb eight-under 64 on the opening day in Sun City, South Africa.

Garcia, twice a victor in Sun City before the Nedbank Challenge became part of the tour, made eight birdies and was bogey-free in a brilliant start to the penultimate tournament of the season.

The 29-year-old was three under after 13, but he bogeyed the 14, a par five he would have expected to birdie, and then came the ugly six which saw him crash out of the top 20. Oosthuizen, who is from South Africa, has never won his country's most prestigious tournament.

Four-time major victor Rory McIlroy, who needs a top-two finish to stay in with a chance of winning the Race to Dubai, is 10 shots off the pace on level par, after a one-over 73.

McIlroy must win at least one of the final two events of the season, the Nedbank and next weekend's DP World Tour Championship, to have a chance of overhauling Race to Dubai leader Francesco Molinari, who isn't playing in Sun City. But he was still solid overall on a course with lightning-fast greens and a series of pins tucked away in the corners.

"Shooting 68 or 69 today would have been great, but unfortunately that didn't work out, but you have to be extremely precise on this course", said Garcia.

In 2011, a Caribbean Airlines jet carrying 163 people crashed as it landed at the Guyana airport, injuring several passengers. A Fly Jamaica Boeing 757-200 aircraft has overshot the runway at Guyana's main global airport, injuring several people.

"Like I said earlier, it's very important to keep the ball in play as much as possible here and that's what I was trying to do when I didn't feel comfortable with the driver, because if it got too narrow, I hit something less than that and tried to play the hole maybe a little bit tougher and realise those things".

Oosthuizen's second round gave the 2010 Open champion the chance of a first tournament win since February 2016.

But Fisher had a series of mishaps on No. 15.

McIlroy missed the fairway off the tee on 17 and then found a bunker.

Fox mixed three birdies, and an eagle - on the par five 10th - with three bogeys, and is tied with South African Branden Grace.

Sergio Garcia held on to his lead at the Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player, as Louis Oosthuizen impressed on home soil.
