White House bans CNN reporter after confrontation with Trump

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks as CNN's Jim Acosta standing at right listens during a news conference in the East Room of the White House

Trump eventually said to him, after some heated back and forth, "Honestly, I think you should let me run the country, you run CNN, and if you did it well, your ratings would be much better" - before trying to move along to another reporter. Acosta's pass was revoked by the administration after he refused to give up the microphone during a Wednesday press conference in which Trump called him "a rude, bad person".

The video they are referring to showed a White House aide trying to take away a microphone from CNN reporter Jim Acosta before he put his hand down on her's as she was trying to grab it.

Acosta asked Trump if he thought he had "demonized" migrants by calling the group an "invasion".

When Acosta tried to ask further questions, Trump became angry, demanding that the reporter sit down and give up the microphone.

"You have to treat the White House with respect, you have to treat the presidency with respect", Trump said, claiming the late Republican president, Ronald Reagan, would have acted similarly.

Acosta's credentials were revoked on Thursday after a tense press conference on Wednesday, in which Trump dodged questions and lashed out at several journalists.

CNN Vice President of Communications and Digital Partnership Matt Dornic said it was "absolutely shameful" that Sanders had released a "doctored" video. "He ignored a lot of them", she said. "He apparently wants to goad Donald Trump into a confrontation". Why might other journalists in the room react that way, and why did Fox News's Chris Wallace say that Acosta had "embarrassed himself" on Wednesday?

CNN said in a statement that Acosta has the network's full support.

"What a stupid question that is, what a stupid question".

The White House is standing its ground, and, in a statement on Thursday, Sanders said that she stands by her previous position.

At Friday's Q&A session, Trump also had sharp words for CNN White House correspondent Abby Phillip.

When a White House intern tried to take a microphone from Acosta, he blocked her with his arm. The way you treat other people is awful.

"I watch her get up - I mean, you talk about somebody that's a loser".

"That's such a racist question", Trump responded.

"What a stupid question you asked", Trump replied. He said she was rude for interrupting another reporter, though he did briefly answer one of Ryan's questions. "Even if President Trump doesn't intend it, some see him as directly appealing to the racists", she wrote.

Despite losing his White House pass, and the ability to travel with Trump and the rest of the press corps on Air Force One, Acosta went to Paris to cover Trump's meeting with world leaders this weekend. Trump said of the incident Friday that Acosta "was not nice to that young woman".
