May stares into the Brexit abyss as domestic opposition mounts

Stephen Farry deputy leader of the Alliance Party

The news follows separate reports from news agency Bloomberg last week, which suggested Prime Minister was facing a "backlash" from some Brexit-supporting Ministers after telling Cabinet her planned deal would see the United Kingdom sign up to "level playing field" rules as part of the Irish border backstop commitment.

And Martin Callanan, a minister in Britain's Brexit department, said all involved were "straining every sinew to make sure that we get a deal but we have to get a deal that is right for the U.K., right for the European Union and one that would be acceptable to the U.K. Parliament".

Roughly a third of the 1,083 small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) surveyed by polling company YouGov traded internationally.

In Britain, pro-Brexit and pro-EU politicians alike warned May that the deal she seeks is likely to be shot down by Parliament.

For the many traders positioned against the pound, that means any good news can leave them scrambling to cover against more losses, exacerbating the move higher.

Johnson, who has on occasion been seen as a potential leadership candidate for his party and nation but has repeatedly failed to act at decisive moments, continued: "We have agreed to become the punk of Brussels, signing up not just to their existing rulebook but to huge chunks of future regulation - even though we will have no say in drafting that legislation...."

Meanwhile, the Labour Party promised to mobilise all political parties to prevent May's government from exiting without a deal.

May's snap election in 2017 lost her Conservative Party its parliamentary majority and the government is now propped up by 10 Democratic Unionist Party lawmakers from Northern Ireland. 7, potentially pushing the vote into the new year. It is unclear who might replace her.

"While I am very cautious not to over-egg that, I think it is important that people understand that's exactly what potentially could happen". A national election is possible, though not legally necessary.

Mr Johnson, who resigned as foreign secretary in July over Mrs May's Brexit strategy, writes in his column: "Even if we agree with the European Union that the United Kingdom must have a unilateral break clause, so that we can go our own sweet way at a time of our own choosing, it is irrelevant because the programme and ambition of the government is to remain in captivity, to stay in our cell even if we are given the theoretical key to escape".

Speaking at the Lord Mayor's banquet in London on Monday night, the PM said: "Overwhelmingly, the British people want us to get on with delivering Brexit, and I am determined to deliver for them". The British parliament goes on holiday on december 20. "If we have a no-deal scenario, the whole viability of Northern Ireland could be undermined".

The Standard & Poor's ratings agency last month said a no-deal Brexit could push the British economy into recession and cause unemployment to spike to 7.4 percent by 2021. "And you can be absolutely sure that this idea will be at the heart of the "deal" that I have no doubt the prime minister will shortly and magically secure".

While May has for months faced fierce opposition from Brexit-supporting lawmakers, who say she has betrayed the referendum result by seeking such close ties with the European Union, she is now facing increasing pressure from pro-Europeans too.

Around half a dozen ministers, including Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab and Environment Secretary Michael Gove, are prepared to tell her that leaving without a deal would be better than the proposals on the table from Brussels, according to The Daily Telegraph.

"That's giving the opponents of the deal a lot of time to pull together a campaign to vote it down".
