Armistice Day: White House defends Trump WW1 no-show

Paris was covered in clouds with drizzling rain through most of the day

US President Donald Trump could not attend a commemoration in France for US soldiers and marines killed during World War I on Saturday because of the rain, the White House said.

Not among them: Trump, a day after he riled up his critics by canceling a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in France, the final resting place of almost 2,000 US soldiers killed in the World War I battle of Belleau Wood.

Trump was scheduled to lay a wreath and observe a moment of silence Saturday at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial, located approximately 60 miles northeast of Paris.

The president was branded "pathetic" for not attending the World War I remembrance event in northern France honouring USA military.

The event was attended by the President's chief of staff John Francis Kelly and General Joseph Dunford, Jr.

Speech next day at American Cemetery in pouring rain! President Donald Trump canceled his visit due to bad weather. Following a wave of criticism, the White House altered its reasoning on Monday and said the only way Trump could have made it to the cemetery was by vehicle, which would have interfered with the roads. The Battle of Belleau Wood near the site was a critical conflict in the war and a pivotal encounter in Marine Corps history.

He has said sanctions would stay in place until North Korea disarmed, but that he was "no rush" to force the pace of disarmament. President Trump is still expected to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and top Korean officials in January.

The MP tweeted that Mr Trump was not fit to represent the U.S. and said that he was a "pathetic inadequate" for not defying the weather "to pay his respects to the fallen". He called it "fake news".

"Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism, nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism", Macron said.

Last year, foggy weather caused similar security concerns which prevented Mr Trump from visiting the demilitarised zone between North and South Korea. In a series of postings Tuesday he took aim at French President Emmanuel Macron, mocked the country for previous war losses and repeated his assertion that the country should pay more for joint defenses.

"We want to help Europe but it has to be fair. He's only got one umbrella, and he couldn't figure out how to bring it on the plane", Colbert said as the now-infamous clip of President Trump leaving an open umbrella outside of Air Force One played.

He said it is "unfair to have the European security today being assured just by the United States", but did not respond to a question about why he felt France needed protection from the US.
