Audio of Khashoggi's Murder May Implicate Saudi Crown Prince

Saudi officials denied Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had any knowledge of Khashoggi's killing

Shortly after Jamal Khashoggi was murdered, a member of a Saudi assassination squad is said to have phoned a superior and told him "tell your boss" their mission had been accomplished.

People who've heard a recording of Saudi columnist Jamal Khashoggi's murder don't believe it implicates Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler, U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton said, weighing in on a controversy that has sharply raised worldwide pressure on the top oil exporter.

The audio recording of the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi is so "atrocious" that a Saudi intelligence official who heard it speculated that "only someone who took heroin" could carry it out, Turkey's president was quoted as saying Tuesday.

The crown prince has come under scrutiny for having knowledge of the killing, which involved some members of his security entourage. In fact, when the Saudi intelligence officer listened to the recording he was so shocked that he said 'this one probably took heroin.

Though the audio recording does not conclusively implicate Crown Prince, analysts say it's an important clue.

Ankara also said that Saudi intelligence were so outraged by the recording that they believed the killers of Khashoggi "were on heroin".

Journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a contributor to "The Washington Post", who vanished on 2 October 2018 during a visit to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

The high profile of Khashoggi, a USA -based Washington Post contributing columnist, and the drip-drip of sensational leaks about his demise have provoked a global outcry and tarnished the reputation of the brash young prince, whose efforts to cast himself as a bolder reformer and trusted US ally have often chafed against his policies overseas.

Mr Trump has threatened consequences for Saudi Arabia after Riyadh's public prosecutor admitted he had been killed in a premeditated rogue operation at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last month.

But, they added, United States and European officials are not certain to whom "your boss" refers. "Due process is in train at the moment in Saudi Arabia and I was led to believe there will be rapid progress in making sure that people are brought to justice".

Earlier this week, Recep Tayip Erdogan claimed that Turkish authorities had shared the audio recording of Khashoggi's murder with Saudi Arabia, the US, France, Canada, Germany, and the UK.

"It must be revealed who gave them the order to murder".

Under mounting pressure, Saudi Arabia has changed its narrative about Khashoggi's killing. Turkish officials have said little about what they might contain.

Trump now says Saudi Arabia misused USA -supplied weapons in the Saudi-led coalition's bombing campaign in Yemen, which has helped trigger the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
