Some migrants in a caravan of Central Americans have made long leaps forward in their journey to the USA border, with a first sizable group arriving in the border city of Tijuana, while others on Wednesday were left stranded far behind.

Jalisco Gov. Aristoteles Sandoval said Thursday the state had never agreed to transport them to Nayarit.

"Our service members are performing duties along the Southwest Border in support of Customs & Border Protection and will continue to do so until otherwise directed by our senior leaders, to include the commander-in-chief", said Mike Kucharek, chief of integrated communications for U.S. Northern Command, which is overseeing the mission.

CBP officials told reporters late October that there were at least two large migrant caravans headed to the US - one consisting of approximately 3,500 migrants and another consisting of approximately 3,000 migrants.

Larger numbers of migrants are expected to arrive at the border in the next couple of days. He said so far 24 buses had left Escuinapa on an eight-drive to Navojoa in Sonora state.

However, some small groups broke off along the way and went on ahead, either using buses, trains or long-haul truck rides to get to the border quicker.

The 5,000 migrants, who say they are fleeing persecution, poverty and violence in their home countries of Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, have largely been making their journey on foot. Some 533 migrants had requested a voluntary return to their countries, the government reported.

Beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday, at least three northbound lanes at San Ysidro Port of Entry and one lane at Otay Mesa Port of Entry will be closed for the installation of barbed wire, barriers, barricades and fencing, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

U.S. authorities closed down several lanes of traffic at two border crossings from Tijuana to California on Tuesday so that soldiers can install barbed wire fencing and barricades to reinforce security.
