USA midterms 2018: Why can't Florida count?

Any margin smaller than 0.25 results in an automatic recount by hand.

Comparing the Florida race to the 2000 presidential election, when Florida was the key to the race between George W. Bush and Al Gore, prompting a recount of the state's vote, Schumer said his reasoning for a delay in reporting the vote tallies was that the November election did not affect the electoral vote.

Scott and his Democratic opponent, incumbent senator Bill Nelson, emerged from Election Day separated by less than half a percentage point in the vote count, triggering an automatic recount under state law. No irregularities have been reported by either law enforcement or election observers from both parties who are watching the recount. Bill Nelson. "So I think at this point that it's going to go through the process of the manual recount and the machine recount and we'll see what happens, but we're confident that Rick Scott will be the next senator of Florida".

Scott's campaign called the move "frivolous and laughable".

Broward County Circuit Judge Jack Tuter, who on Monday rejected Scott's request for the emergency injunction, urged both sides to be restrained in their public statements as the state faces a repeat of its dramatic role in the 2000 US presidential vote recount.

Florida is home to some of the most restrictive voting laws in the country (one of which was overturned this cycle, giving roughly 1.4 million ex-felons the right to vote), and with each attack on democracy from people who are poised to win these elections, you can't help but wonder if they're trying to hide more subtle attacks on our democracy that helped them win these elections. "There have been issues that haven't gone the way we wanted it".

Mr Trump repeated his complaints over the Florida races in a Twitter post today. "He's doing this for the same reason he's been making false and panicked claims about voter fraud - he's anxious that when all the votes are counted he'll lose this election". Trump on Monday tweeted that "An honest vote count is no longer possible" in Florida, without elaborating, and said "new ballots showed up out of nowhere". "Must go with Election Night!" he wrote.

Studies have found no evidence of large-scale voter fraud in the United States, although courts have found evidence through the nation's history of policies meant to suppress voting by minorities. State law mandates recounts in elections where margin of victory is within 0.5 percentage points.

At a press conference Tuesday on Capitol Hill, Nelson and Schumer stood together, calling on Scott to recuse himself from the recount. If true, that would be a violation of election law.

"With the (outdated) election equipment that we have, the potential of conducting all of these is impossible, it is impossible", said Supervisor of Elections for Palm Beach County Susan Bucher said. Scott asked the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to investigate his allegations of fraud, but neither the department nor the State Department did so because no credible criminal allegations had been made, according to an FDLE spokeswoman who spokes with Newsweek at the time. If some of these counties fail to re-submit vote totals by this deadline, the elections will default to the initial outcomes favoring Scott, DeSantis and Fried. "But there's laws. Comply with the laws".

If the Senate race does go to a hand recount, the deadline for counties to finish is Sunday. Several U.S House of Representative races are also still too close to call. "When we can't trust our elections, we don't have a democracy". Nelson wants that timeline extended so that the count includes any mail-in ballots received up to 10 days after the Election, the current cutoff for ballots mailed from outside the U.S. Nelson has also filed a second lawsuit challenging the state's decision to invalidate certain mail-in and provisional ballots on which the voter's signature does not match the one that appears in state voter registration records.
