Netflix looks to penetrate Asia market with cheaper 'mobile-only' package

By signing up for the one month plan on Netflix's mobile only test, subscribers are entitled to get unlimited access to movies and TV series available in the app but they could only stream on either mobile phones or tablets. That would mean that devices like Apple's new iPad Pro should qualify.

Furthermore, the number of new customers Netflix could gain by offering a mobile-only plan would far outweigh the number of users that would downgrade to a plan restricting them to their mobile devices.

What do you think of this mobile-only model Netflix is testing?

This seems to be what all the rumours regarding a cheaper subscription for India may have been about. If the reduced fee mobile-only subscription is an overseas success - a spokesperson confirmed trials are "running in a few countries" - it's only a matter of time before it hits the United States.

Entrackr queries to Netflix about its detail India plan did not elicit any response.

Speaking with Netflix CEO Reed Hastings last week, Bloomberg learned that the company was considering testing a lower-priced tier of its streaming service in Asian territories. If users want to watch Netflix on their computers or TVs, they will need to upgrade to the normal options that are between $8-$10.

Netflix's mobile only plan costs just 17 Malaysian ringgit ($4.05) a month, which is roughly half of its Basic plan that costs 33 ringgit ($7.87). It's unclear whether a mobile service will come to the USA and other markets.

Netflix has reportedly been testing a subscription plan which is targeted only for mobile users.

More than 79 million of their subscribers come from outside of the U.S., and Netflix was able to bolster its yearly earnings with a strong third quarter that saw them gain 7 million subscribers.
