Google rolling out student pricing for YouTube Premium and Music Premium

YouTube is embarking on a bold new strategy regarding its original content, with the Google-owned video platform set to provide users with free, ad-supported versions of its YouTube Originals shows, as reported by Variety.

YouTube-which began its subscription service, originally titled YouTube Red, in 2015-is also shifting its thinking about paid subscriptions.

YouTube's paid option will still remove ads from originals as well as all other videos, and it comes with music streaming privileges.

The dozens of previously released shows and movies in YouTube Premium, such as the first season of popular action comedy "Cobra Kai", will remain behind the paywall, the company said. Even then, YouTube's original programming won't go away entirely, but it seems that the amount of content it produces will be reduced as a cost saving measure.

The company said the move was aimed at satisfying growing worldwide user interest in original programming and advertiser demand to associate with special content.

Anthony Davis Trade Rumors: NBA Wants Lakers-Celtics Rivalry?
Having Marcus in there gave me that outlet to be able get off the ball. "We get a chance to go back home and get some wins". The Celtics have an abundance of talent, but it is about chemistry and players working as a unit to be successful.

YouTube has already experimented with this model, so it wouldn't be surprising to see it implemented on a larger scale in the future. You can read a statement from the streaming site below. But doing so also means shelling out $15 a month, though you do get the added perks of ad-free and offline viewing.

The big picture: YouTube tried for years to compete with heavyweights Netflix, Hulu and Amazon but seemingly wasn't able to loosen their collective grip on the original content industry.

Going against the grain, YouTube is reportedly scaling back its original content plans.

But with two billion users across the globe, YouTube has a huge audience for ad-supported content.

It's a dilemma that YouTube has been wrestling with for years, and according to some industry insiders, it's the reason why YouTube has struggled to create a successful for-pay subscription service.
