With the eighth-generation Porsche 911, the designers, engineers, developers, and strategists in Stuttgart have, once again, carefully evolved their most popular sports auto and moved it another step forward into the future. Only the Carrera S and Carrera 4S trims have been revealed but you can count on Porsche eventually adding close to two dozen all up.
Porsche has pulled the wraps off the new and updated 911 2019.
The 3.0-litre flat-six turbocharged engine has been tweaked with extra power by means of an improved injection process and a new layout for the turbochargers and charge air cooling system, increasing maximum outputs from 309kW to 331 kW.
Price £93,110 Engine 6cyl, 2981cc, turbo, petrol Power 444bhp Torque tbc Gearbox 8-spd dual-clutch automatic 0-62mph 3.7sec Top speed 191mph Economy 31.7mpg (NEDC average) CO2, tax band 205g/km, 37%. According to Porsche, the new Carrera can do the sprint in 3.7 seconds while the all-wheel drive 4s can accomplish the feat in 3.6 seconds. The new 911 Carrera S tops out at 308 km/h, while the 4S runs out of puff at 306 km/h. Improvements include larger turbos, a new intercooler and new injectors. A broader nose wraps around 20-inch wheels up front and 21-inchers at the rear.
At the front, new LED headlamps flank more pronounced contours to the hood. At the front, the body width has increased by 45 millimeters (1.77 inches), making room for a wider front track. Meanwhile the rear gets a wider, variable-position rear spoiler, together with a car-spanning light bar.
Porsche 911 revealed: price, specs and release date
Now playing: Watch this: The 992 generation of Porsche 911 is here - and it looks.
The new 911, internally codenamed 992, has been re-engineered extensively and now features a new platform structure with a greater amount of aluminium in its rear section, improving weight distribution. The smooth surfacing along the sides is now unbroken thanks to the flush, pop-out door handles. In addition to a central tachometer, the driver looks at two frameless displays, while beneath the large central screen are five buttons for quick access to the most important functions.
Safety has received top priority on the new 911s and Porsche has included a new camera-based warning and brake-assist system that detects the risk of collision with moving objects and initiates emergency braking.
While Porsche hasn't yet confirmed details of the hybrids, we understand that the batteries will be positioned up front, counterbalancing the 911's rear-mounted engine and giving the vehicle nearly flawless 50/50 weight distribution for the first time in its long history.
The eighth-generation model carries top billing at this week's LA motor show and features revised engines, an upgraded interior and greater efficiency - all wrapped up in a design that looks nearly exactly like the old one. The brand will also introduce plug-in hybrid versions of the latest 911, though they will only arrive with the facelifts that are expected to come in 2022.
