Ohio Has Second-Highest Rate Of Overdose Deaths In U.S.

We’ve never really seen anything like this’ US suicide rates hit 50-year peak

According to a new report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drugs killed a record number of people past year.

Another recently released report from the CDC found that life expectancy in the country declined to 78.6 years, the third consecutive year for a downward trend.

Life expectancy in the United States continued its extraordinary decline in 2017 after stagnating in 2016 and falling in 2015. The number of heroin deaths, 15,482, also did not rise from the previous year.

Recent analysis from the Drug Enforcement Agency indicates that drugs continue to grow cheaper and more prevalent as they flow freely across the southern border and in to the country through the USA mail. West Virginia again led the nation with 57.8 deaths per 100,000 people, followed by Ohio, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia.

Age-specific death rates between 2016 and 2017 increased for age groups 25-34, 35-44, and 85 and over. There were more than 47,000 suicides, up from a little under 45,000 the year before. "Life expectancy is improving in many places in the world. Rates in the most rural US counties are almost two times higher than rates in the most urban counties".

In a third report, the government detailed the ongoing growth of deaths from suicide, which has climbed steadily since 1999 and grown worse since 2006. Preliminary data released last month also said drug overdose deaths have fallen over the a year ago.

In a separate report, the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics reported the suicide rate increased by 3.7 percent. It is the third straight year life expectancy in the U.S. has declined or stayed flat, reversing course after decades of improvement. In years past, declines in heart disease deaths were enough to offset increases in some other kinds of death, but no longer, Anderson said. Men could anticipate a life span of 76.1 years, down a tenth of a year from 2016. From 2016 to 2017, the age-adjusted death rate for the entire population increased by 0.4 percent.

Overdose deaths are higher than deaths from HIV, vehicle crashes or gun violence at their peaks.

The CDC reports in 2017, there were 70,237 drug overdose deaths in the United States.

Although the US has struggled with a drug crisis for years, overdoses have only recently become a major driver of the overall mortality rate because decreases in other causes of death, like heart disease, have leveled off after long-term declines.

"Tragically, this troubling trend is largely driven by deaths from drug overdose and suicide", said CDC director Robert Redfield in a statement. In urban America, the rate is 11.1 per 100,000 people; in the most rural parts of the country, it is 20 per 100,000.

CDC officials did not speculate about what's behind declining life expectancy, but Dr. William Dietz, a disease prevention expert at George Washington University, said he sees a sense of hopelessness.

The suicide rate in 2017 for males aged 75 and over (39.7) was significantly lower than the rate in 1999 (42.4). The rate has been going up by approximately 71 percent per year since 2013.

"We are starting to see more people dying as a result of using cocaine that has fentanyl cut into it", Levine said.
