Theresa May: I will be PM to take Britain out of EU

G20 leaders summit in Buenos Aires

May has acknowledged the Brexit deal is not ideal, but says it delivers on voters' decision to leave the European Union while retaining close ties with the bloc, a key trading partner and ally.

Mrs May is facing defeat in the vital vote on 11 December, with opposition parties as well as scores of Tory MPs saying they plan to reject the agreement.

A vote last month said the full advice should be made available to MPs.

The Sunday Times said in a letter sent last month to Cabinet ministers, he advised the only way out of the backstop - created to prevent the return of a hard border with the Republic - once it was invoked was to sign a new trade deal, a process which could take years.

Dominic Raab, who quit as Brexit secretary last month in protest against May's deal, told the Sunday Times: "The legal position is clear".

On November 14, May's cabinet released a draft of the Brexit withdrawal deal which comes in two parts: a 585-page withdrawal agreement and a 26-page statement on future relations between the United Kingdom and the EU.

He also said a second referendum would be "far better" than Mrs May's deal.

"I will be talking with Members of Parliament ... and explaining why passing this deal in the vote that will take place in the House of Commons will take us to certainty for the future, and that failure to do that would only lead to uncertainty".

The last-minute plan comes amid fear the deal is on course to lose by up to 200 votes in the Commons.

Following the incidents, CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez called the affair a "sad day for South American football" .

"There is a real risk if we don't vote for this deal there may be a majority in the House of Commons for a second referendum", he said.

The backstop has proven highly contentious, particularly as it does not appear to be time-limited and Britain will not be allowed to leave it without the European Union's agreement - and Robbins' advice to the prime minister about it, passed to The Telegraph by a concerned minister, appears to confirm that even the government admits falling into it would be bad for Britain.

He added: "This fundamentally works against the interests of the single market and against the interests of European nations". "It's important to note that we are making him available", a No 10 source said. "We can sit in the backstop and say "No, absolutely not", he said.

This will put May in a hard position as she attempts to lobby Conservative Party votes for her bill, while potentially having to reveal compromises over the so-called Northern Ireland "backstop" position which could doom it in the eyes of pro-Brexit MPs.

Sir Keir said that they were ready to initiate contempt of Parliament proceedings unless the Government backs down.

He also said Labour would seek a vote of no confidence in the government if she lost the vote, a widely forecast outcome.

British media reported that Labour would join forces with other opposition parties to launch the contempt procedure, including the Scottish National Party and the Liberal Democrats.

DUP MP Sammy Wilson has said that publishing the government's full legal advice on Brexit will show Prime Minister Theresa May is a "liar".
