Australian cricket star Usman Khawaja hung his head in his hands as tears welled in his eyes during training on Tuesday - just hours after he learned his brother had been arrested for allegedly faking a terror plot to frame his love rival.

Australia batsman Usman Khawaja has asked for privacy after his older brother was arrested in New South Wales on Tuesday.

Police made the arrest of Khawaja in relation to the alleged attempt to pervert justice and forgery of documents.

The documents were allegedly found at the University of NSW in August.

Counter-terrorism police detained Arsalan Khawaja, alleging he wrote a fraudulent diary entry that led to the now-withdrawn terror charge against Sri Lankan national Mohamed Kamer Nilar Nizamdeen.

However he was released in October after police failed to connect his handwriting to the writing in the notebook.

Assistant police commissioner Mick Willing told reporters that Mr Nizamdeen, 25, had been the victim of a "planned and calculated" ruse, which he said was "motivated, in part, by a personal grievance".

The 39-year-old is also required to report to Parramatta police station three times a week and is barred from contacting people who may be called as witnesses, with his next court date set for 12 February.

2 killed in violence over cow slaughter in north India
UP DGP OP Singh has called the Bulandshahr incident a big conspiracy, adding that the matter is not just a law and order issue. Of the 27, at least four are workers and functionaries of right-wing organisations such as Bajrang Dal, the officials said.

An alleged hit list included the former Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull and landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House.

"We have no information to suggest that there is any ongoing threat to the community arising from our inquiries into the matter".

The cricketer said: "Out of respect for the process it'd be inappropriate for me to make any further comments".

As Australia prepare for Thursday's opening Test against India in Adelaide, Usman Khawaja fronted the media to address the situation.

Police said there was no actual threat related to the document they allege Khawaja fabricated. "We feel very sorry for him and what happened to him".

On Tuesday, New South Wales police expressed "regret" for Mr Nizamdeen's experience.

"He has been charged with one count of attempting to pervert justice [Criminal Crimes act 1914 - Cth] and one count of forgery - making a false document [NSW Crimes Act]".
