Bobby White, a spokesman for Achievement School District in Memphis, said students from five of the district's schools were on the bus.

A Memphis public school superintendent says a third grader from one of its charter schools was killed in a bus crash in central Arkansas.

At least 45 other people were injured when the bus tumbled down the embankment.

One child is dead and at least 45 other individuals (updated from release of 5:47 AM), majority children, are reported to be injured, as the result of the crash.

State police said the driver told investigators he lost control of the bus but it was not immediately clear what caused him to lose control.

The bus was carrying a youth football team from the Memphis area that had played in a championship game in Dallas. One child was reported as dying in the accident, while some 45 other people were reportedly injured in the crash. Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock said it received more than 20 patients following the morning crash. There were also adult coaches and chaperones on the bus who were hurt, police said. They were treated for bruising, lacerations and some orthopedic injuries then released. A spokeswoman said she couldn't provide any details, citing privacy laws. The bus crashed into an oncoming tractor-trailer truck.
