Iran's missile program upsets USA war tactics

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei

The language of the United Nations resolution "calls on" rather than "forbids" Iran from testing its missiles, according to Trita Parsi, the president of the National Iranian American Council.

As Reuters pointed out in its report on Tuesday's Security Council meeting, this wariness was put on display in March when other European Union member states rebuffed efforts by the UK, France, and Germany to impose sanctions on the Iranian ballistic missile program.

Washington's Iran special envoy Brian Hook insisted that despite Tehran's assertions to the contrary, Iran's missile tests were not defensive in nature.

"It is a grave and escalating threat, and nations around the world, not just Europe, need to do everything they can to be targeting Iran's missile program", Hook said.

It follows a statement from US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Saturday, in which he accused Iran of test-firing a missile capable of carrying nukes and in breach of the 2015 nuclear agreement agreed between Tehran and world powers.

FILE - United Kingdom Ambassador Karen Pierce address a meeting of the United Nations Security Council at U.N. headquarters, October 23, 2018.

"We do not believe that Iran violated UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which contains only a call - not a ban, as our Western partners say - to Tehran to refrain from activities related to launches of nuclear-capable ballistic missiles", the Russian diplomat said.

"We will continue to both develop and test missiles".

Child killed when football team's bus crashes in Arkansas
The bus was carrying a youth football team from the Memphis area that had played in a championship game in Dallas. One child was reported as dying in the accident, while some 45 other people were reportedly injured in the crash.

Qassemi addressed all the countries that have closed their eyes to the realities and the transparent and stabilizing policies of Iran by raising these wild assumptions and groundless excuses, and urged them not to sacrifice regional and worldwide peace, stability, and security for the goals of others who think Iran's constructive relations with regional and world countries are against their unilateralist policies and excessive demands. "The worldwide community can not keep turning a blind eye every time Iran blatantly ignores Security Council resolutions".

Pompeo has been pressing Germany, France and the United Kingdom to join the USA in withdrawing from the Iran nuclear accord signed during the presidency of Barack Obama in 2015.

"I want to thank you for everything that you're doing, for your strong statements on the latest violation by Iran on the ballistic missiles", said Netanyahu, ahead of a planned meeting with Pompeo in Brussels.

U.K. Ambassador Karen Pierce said that the type of missile launched on December 1 went "way beyond legitimate defensive needs" and points to Iran's destabilizing behavior in the region.

And while Pompeo claimed the test violated United Nations resolution 2231, the launch does not constitute a violation of the United Nations measure, according to the language of the resolution.

The secretary spoke before formally warning Russian Federation it has 60 days to start complying with a landmark nuclear missile treaty or the US will abandon the pact, raising concern about Europe's future security. It's all coming from Iran.

"Furthermore, this ballistic missile activity is destabilising and increases regional tensions", it added.
