A special member of the Bush family saluted President George H.W. Bush Tuesday, after stealing the show during the Monday's ceremonies honoring the president.
Around the clock in the Rotunda over two days, thousands - many who had lined up in near-freezing temperatures for hours to enter the Capitol - paid their final respects to Bush, whose flag-draped coffin rested on the wooden catafalque built in 1865 for the casket of assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. Once at the casket's side, the aide helped Dole stand. Bob Dole, a compatriot in war, peace and political struggle, steadied himself out of his wheelchair and saluted his old friend and one-time rival. He was the Republican presidential nominee in 1996.
Bush passed away on Friday at the age of 94. The service will take place tomorrow at The National Cathedral in Washington.
As the nation continues to mourn former President George H.W. Bush, a number of federal and state offices will be closed Wednesday.
Trump and his wife joined mourners at the Capitol Rotunda Monday night. The late President Bush called Trump a "blowhard".
Along with Sully, people across the US are now mourning the 41st US President - Bush served one term from 1989 until 1993 and oversaw the country through the fall of the Soviet Union and the Gulf War.
Bill Clark CQ Roll Call
"Here lies a great man", said Rep. Paul Ryan, the House speaker, and "a gentle soul".
A Connecticut Yankee from a wealthy family who moved to Texas to be an oilman, Bush has been eulogized as a president with a keen sense of civility and duty.
During his four years in the White House, Bush ended the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait, steered the United States through the end of the Cold War and condemned China's 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators in Beijing's Tiananmen Square.
Although Bush's funeral services are suffused with the flourishes accorded presidents, by his choice they will not include a formal funeral procession through downtown Washington.
Sully came to live with Bush in June, following his wife's death in April.
Courts across Maryland will also be closed on Wednesday in honor of the former President. Here's more on just how well the Prince of Wales actually knew George H.W. Bush.
