Spider-Man: Far From Home's Jake Gyllenhaal Confirms He's Playing Mysterio

In a much-liked Instagram video shared Wednesday, actor Jake Gyllenhaal appears to have confirmed he's playing villain Mysterio in the upcoming movie Spider-Man: Far From Home.

The Oscar nominee has given in and joined Instagram, and if his first post is any indication, we expect a ton of adorableness over the coming months. The title of this issue in particular is 'The Return of the Man Called Mysterio!' and Jake suddenly realises his role in the next Sony/Marvel collaboration. It's now unclear which incarnation of Mysterio Gyllenhaal will be portraying.

Jake captioned the video, "I just realized I'm not playing Spider-Man".

The role will be the actor's first major part in a superhero blockbuster film. Quite an odd villain, Mysterio relies on more of a smoke and mirrors approach in trying to defeat his spider-nemesis. His appearance in Spider-Man: Far From Home marks the character's live-action debut. The character was introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man #13 back in June 1964. A special effects expert, Quentin Beck used his talents to create elaborate illusions to commit crimes and to fight Spider-Man.

Jon Watts is returning to direct the sequel to Homecoming, which earned $880 million (£656,216,000) worldwide.

Spider-Man: Far From Home will be released in the United Kingdom on July 5, 2019.
