United Nations chief Guterres calls for more action to tackle climate change

Nations must triple efforts to achieve Paris climate goals: Study

Veteran British nature-documentary broadcaster David Attenborough warned that both civilisation and the natural world are on the brink of collapse, as world leaders prepare to gather in Poland for the United Nations climate summit.

The internationally renowned naturalist Sir David Attenborough says that climate change is the greatest threat to the world in thousands of years. "The continuation of our civilizations and the natural world on which we depend is in your hands".

The two-week conference, in Poland's southern coal mining region of Silesia, is expected to work out how governments can report on their efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and keep global warming within the Paris accord limit.

Negotiators from around the world are meeting in Poland for talks on curbing climate change, three years after sealing a landmark deal in Paris that set a goal of keeping global warming well below 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit).

"It requires everyone in society - individuals, businesses and governments - to play their part in changing behaviours, and I'm pleased that the Scottish Government is able to support the Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action in its work". They will be updated and reported every five years.

A failure to mitigate the impacts of climate change would wreak catastrophic damage on things we all share -our common planet and the prospects for future generations.

Thousands of decision makers from around the world have flocked to the southern Polish city of Katowice for a major United Nations climate change conference that opened on Monday.

British middleman in AgustaWestland scam being extradited to India
Michel was extradited from Dubai yesterday, and was arrested by the CBI upon his arrival in New Delhi last night. However, when he failed to do so, an open non-bailable arrest warrant was issued against him in September 2015.

Speaking in Katowice to delegations from almost 200 nations, Attenborough warned that the world's existence depends on taking swift action to prevent climate change.

"These talks have been embroiled with blame game and had largely shifted away from the main goal of the convention and the Paris Agreement, which is people and planet", Singh said in an interview. Guterres called climate change "the most important issue we face".

The special report on Global Warming of 1.5 C said "rapid and far-reaching transitions in energy, land, urban and infrastructure (including transport and buildings) and industrial systems" would be required to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees.

Envoys from nearly 200 nations gathered in Poland's southern city of Katowice, a day earlier than originally planned because of the large number of issues that need to be resolved by December 14. The 24th Conference of Parties - or COP24 - is a pivotal moment in the global effort to combat climate change. Guterres went on to say that the world is "nowhere near where it needs to be" on the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Attenborough's speech comes at a crossroad for global climate action.

"We need a unifying implementation vision that sets out clear rules, inspires action and promotes raised ambition, based on the principle of equity and common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities in light of different national circumstances".

"These guidelines need to push countries to immediately cut emissions to achieve the 1.5°C temperature goal and to deal with growing climate impacts".

And researchers have also found that climate change is contributing to the destruction of some of the world's most vulnerable natural habitats and is compounding natural disasters, like hurricanes, by increasing rainfall.
