Luis Valbuena Jose Castillo die in car crash in Venezuela

A pair of major league infielders were killed in a auto crash early Friday morning in Venezuela.

Valbuena, 33, and Castillo, 37, had finished playing a game for the Cardenales de Lara in the Dominican Winter League. Their auto had hit a rock in the road, according to the Houston Chronicle.

The Angels said in a statement: "We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former Angel Luis Valbuena and former Major League Baseball infielder José Castillo".

Castillo played from 2004 to 2008 in the majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates, San Francisco Giants and Astros. Reports indicated that the driver of the vehicle and teammate Carlos Rivero both survived. "Our thoughts and prayers are with their loved ones during this time of grief", the Angels said in a statement.

Valbuena, an infielder, played for five Major League Baseball clubs, most recently the Angels in 2017 and 2018. He also played for the Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros and the Angels until the Angels released him in August 2018. "He was a productive player on the field and played a key role in the Astros run to the postseason in 2015", the statement reads.

He played mostly second base and third base. He collected four hits in seven at-bats (.571 average) while hitting a home run and driving in three runs. He played this year for Tijuana in the Mexican League.
