The International Space Station Welcomes Its New Residents

Russia launches first manned voyage to ISS since rocket accident

Roscosmos "Concerned" Over NASA Commercial Crew Program The Russian space agency dispelled doubts about its space program after it had successfully launched astronauts from the Baikonur Cosmodrome to the orbiting outpost on Monday, Dec. 3. The hatch to the Russian ship ferrying the crewmembers opened at 2:37 pm.

The Soyuz lifted off at 1131 GMT from Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, carrying Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko, NASA astronaut Anne McClain and the Canadian Space Agency's David Saint-Jacques.

The latest batch of astronauts to take up residence on board the International Space Station (ISS) have arrived safely following a six-hour flight.

FLIGHT engineer David Saint-Jacques (top), flight engineer Anne McClain of NASA (centre) and Soyuz commander Oleg Kononenko wave farewell prior to boarding Russia's Soyuz MS-11 spacecraft. The launch was successful, and the Soyuz spacecraft docked with the ISS at 17:23 GMT.

The three newest members will then officially begin Expedition 58, which will see them stay on the ISS conducting hundreds of science investigations in fields such as biology, Earth science, human research, physical sciences and technology development.

"We feel very ready for it", she said.

Astronaut Jenni Sidey-Gibbons echoed the message, saying Saint-Jacques was a special role model for her and other young people who may be considering a future in space.

Pujara was himself run out while trying to steal a single, but not before he had made sure the bowlers had something to bowl at. Opener KL Rahul, who has been struggling for runs, flopped again, caught by Aaron Finch at third slip off Hazlewood for two.

"We have liftoff", a NASA television commentator said as the rocket roared into the sky under 930 pounds of thrust and at a speed of 1,770 kilometres per hour. However, he did not get to the station because of the accident of the rocket.

Russian investigators blamed that malfunction, which occurred as the first and second stages of a booster rocket separated, on a damaged sensor.

They will be joined by the members of Expedition 59 - Alexey Ovchinin of Roscomos with NASA astronauts Nick Hague and Christina Hammock Koch in February. They managed to emerge safely despite a harrowing descent back to Earth.

Last month, Roscosmos tweeted a video of the October 11 failed Soyuz rocket launch that forced NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin into making a harrowing emergency landing.

Kononenko, McClain and Saint-Jacques showed no signs of worry as they boarded a bus to take them to the launch.

The last Canadian astronaut to visit the space station was Chris Hadfield, who was on a five-month mission that ended in May 2013.
