Trump Jr. Trolls Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Instagram

'This is a disgrace': Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez slams her future colleagues in Congress for employing unpaid interns and failing to pay staffers a 'living wage'

It is not the first time that Ocasio-Cortez has drawn attention to the high cost of living and inequality in the US capital.

According to the Washington Post, House members of both parties rarely pay interns. "We will be one of them".

On Monday, she said that when she went to a "dive spot in D.C. for some late night food," she talked with the staff. I chatted up the staff.

After hearing this, Ocasio-Cortez declared that she would be providing a "living wage" to all her interns; paying them 15 dollars an hour. "SEVERAL bartenders, managers, & servers *currently worked in Senate + House offices, *" she wrote. She said many of them told her that they were congressional staffers working second jobs, prompting her to call the pay rates for people working in Senate and House offices a "disgrace".

Ocasio-Cortez also revealed that she can not afford an apartment in Washington D.C. until her Congressional salary starts, and is relying on savings to get by in the meantime.

The pair have a long-standing friendship dating back to 2010 where they reportedly first met at the Super Bowl in Miami, Florida. She said: "As a university graduate, I know the personal feeling of pride and excitement that comes with attending university".

Areport in 2017 from non-profit group Pay Our Interns found that in the House, just 8% of Republicans and 3.6% of Democrats pay interns.

Ocasio-Cortez pulled the information from The Nation, a left-leaning magazine.

It found that in the Senate, 51% of Republicans and 31% of Democrats pay their interns.

On Monday, Pay Our Interns tweeted a screenshot of an ad for an unpaid press intern to work for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.

Ocasio-Cortez acknowledged the new fund, noting that it will give $20,000 per member of Congress for their interns. After her election win in November, she disclosed to the New York Times that she was unable to afford an apartment in Washington until she started receiving her own congressional salary, calling the situation one of the "many little ways in which our electoral system isn't even designed (nor prepared) for working-class people to lead".
