North Carolina Democrat Drops Concession Amid Probe

Democrat Calls for Emergency Hearing in North Carolina's 9th District Race Over Voter Fraud

The executive director of the North Carolina Republican Party says he supports a new election if allegations of fraud in the 9th Congressional District race are proven true and it impacted the outcome of the race.

On Monday, Woodhouse appeared to be firmly opposed to the idea of holding a new election, arguing on Twitter that no law allows for an election to be declared "null and void for irregularities that can't be proven to possibly change the outcome".

The controversy has raised the possibility that the North Carolina Board of Elections and Ethics Enforcement will call a new election.

Gerry Cohen, a former special counsel to the North Carolina General Assembly, said the state bans third parties from taking possession of ballots. Republican Mark Harris led by 905 votes over Democrat Dan McCready, who had already conceded.

There is no evidence that the irregularities in absentee ballot returns changed the outcome of the race. "This is against everything that we actively stand for", he said.

That's a shift for Woodhouse, who previously dismissed such calls as a Democratic attempt to steal the election from Harris.

"If somebody said something about the absentee ballots, it is just very possible that it didn't register with us", Woodhouse said.

Trump has repeatedly and without evidence claimed large numbers of illegal immigrants have cast ballots and raised the specter of election fraud during routine but protracted vote counts after the November 6 elections. "It's unfortunate that there's a revisionist history going on". That scandal, involving the alleged disappearance of minority voters' absentee ballots to the apparent benefit of Republican candidate Mark Harris, underscores a remarkable turn in the battle over election integrity.

Yesterday, it was reported that Democrats are seeking to hold an emergency hearing within Congress in regards to the apparent fraud that took place.

But he said there was "a lot of angst" among his campaign aides, who "were all upset about what happened". Two members of Dowless's own staff have said they collected absentee ballots at his behest, not knowing it was illegal.

"I have been studying Southern politics for 30 years and North Carolina politics for 15, and I have never seen anything like that", Bitzer said.

State investigators can order a new election if "irregularities or improprieties occurred to such an extent that they taint the results of the entire election and cast doubt on its fairness". It is illegal to collect or tamper with someone else's ballot.

Dowless earned more than $23,000 working on six campaigns dating back to 2010, and in most of those races, Dowless' candidates received a disproportionately higher percentage of absentee votes in Bladen County.

It was close, but North Carolina Republican Mark Harris was jubilant on election night.

The Wake County district attorney's office in Raleigh and the State Bureau of Investigation are also conducting probes, Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman told The Post. North Carolina Republicans argued that hundreds of ballots submitted in Dowless's race for the Soil and Water Conservation board seat bore similar handwriting, and thus the results were suspect, even though Dowless won his race for reelection, The New Yorker reported.

The North Carolina Board of Elections is slated to hold an open hearing on or before December 21 to discuss the findings of its investigation.
