Thousands march for climate in Paris despite 'yellow vest' unrest

Paris riots

Amid heightened tensions, police seized 28 petrol bombs and three homemade explosive devices Friday at an area blockaded by protesters in Montauban in southern France, a spokesman for the Tarn-et-Garonne prefecture told CNN. A ring of steel surrounded the Elysee Palace itself, as police stationed trucks and reinforced steel barriers in streets throughout the entire neighbourhood.

Posts saying the video shows Parisian demonstrators began circulating after December 1, when the protests in paris became violent, the Associated Press reported. Paris police said 30 people were injured, including three police officers. Belgian police shot back with tear gas and water cannons. Protesters ripped off the plywood protecting the windows and threw flares and other projectiles.

About 100 were detained, many for carrying risky objects like fireworks or clothing that could be used as protection in clashes with police.

He said the Louvre museum, Orsay museum, the two operas, and the Grand Palais were among the sites that would be closed a week after rioters looted and defaced the Arc de Triomphe.

A Starbucks near the Champs-Elysees was smashed wide open and protesters were seen stepping over broken glass and serving themselves to beverages. Subway stations in the centre of town were shut down. Macron agreed to abandon the fuel tax hike, but that hasn't defused the anger, embodied by the fluorescent safety vests that French motorists are required to keep in their cars.

Neither country has proposed a hike in fuel tax - the catalyst for the massive and destructive demonstrations in France in recent weeks.

Some protesters Saturday attempted to block the Porte Maillot dual carriageway, which is a toll-free route into Paris. The national gendarme service posted a video on Twitter of police tackling a protester and confiscating his unsafe material, which appeared to be primarily a tennis racket.

Rising living costs have been the basis for the riots, with 77 percent of French people supporting the "yellow vest" movement according to French news site Le Figaro.

Blue armoured vehicles beneath the Arc de Triomphe and rows of riot police blocked the demonstrators' passage down the Champs-Elysees avenue towards the heart of presidential power. Thousands of demonstrators clash with police on the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

Out of the media spotlight, Macron met Friday night with riot police being deployed in Paris Saturday. The group has no leaders but is united in its feeling that Macron and his government are out of touch with the concerns of ordinary French families.

Mr Macron, who has not spoken in public since he condemned last Saturday's disturbances while at the G20 summit in Argentina, will address the nation early next week, his office said. "But I still want to be here to say 'Stop, that's enough, this has to stop'".

Demonstrations have been taking places elsewhere in France as well.

Interior minister Christophe Castaner urged calm: "I ask the yellow vests that want to bring about a peaceful message to not go with the violent people".

Authorities have detained 343 people on Saturday amid exceptional security measures.

Since the unrest began in November in response to a sharp increase in diesel fuel taxes, four people have been killed in protest-related accidents. Christmas markets, national soccer matches and countless other events have been cancelled due to the protests.

Heavily armed French police deployed tear gas and stun grenades against an army of Yellow Vests gathered in central Paris demanding Emmanuel Macron's head.

President Trump commented on France's unrest on Saturday, suggesting the demonstrations proved "The Paris Agreement isn't working out so well for Paris", he tweeted.
