Broncos sign Vic Fangio to a four-year deal

Death by inches Vic Fangio brings emphasis on details to a Broncos team hindered by mistakes

One year after winning Super Bowl 50, Kubiak stepped down as the Denver Broncos' head coach for health reasons.

Fangio is well-traveled as a defensive assistant or coordinator in the National Football League, a streak going back to 1986 when he was first hired to coach linebackers for the New Orleans Saints.

Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who played a leading role in the revival of Chicago's identity over four seasons, will be the next head coach of the Denver Broncos, according to reports late Wednesday morning. Despite an offer from the Green Bay Packers, Fangio stuck around with the Chicago Bears for one more season. "I was doing my best sell job and this happened. Everybody just wishes him well".

Elway concurred with star cornerback Chris Harris Jr.'s assessment last week that the Broncos need to modernize their offensive and defensive schemes to keep up with teams such as the Rams and Chiefs, who have fully embraced the run-pass option craze and other college concepts.

A year after coach Matt Nagy made the important move to retain Fangio, he now must find the replacement as defensive coordinator.

Is it too late to get a flu shot?
It is most effective if started within the first 48 hours of symptoms, so it's important to call as soon as flu is suspected. Sterling Regional MedCenter is restricting visitors to prevent the spread of flu and other respiratory illnesses.

No official announcement has come from the team. "What he does defensively, but on top of that, too, I think he's such a great human being". He treats people the right way. "Those are two things that I look for, and there are guys we have feel for", Elway said last week.

Fangio has never been a head coach at any level.

Much as former Denver defensive coordinator Wade Phillips used to draw praise from players less than half his age, Fangio was greatly respected in the Bears' locker room. That led to Fangio's arrival in Chicago.

The Broncos have had four starting quarterbacks over that span, including free agent Case Keenum, who was underwhelming in his first year in Denver in 2018.

Fangio replaces Vance Joseph who was sacked by the Broncos after two seasons. He did a strong job of putting together a staff a year ago, but Fangio and the defense was already in place.
