The announcement was made by CAF who are the African's football governing body as the Egypt worldwide defeated Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane and Arsenal star Emerick Aubameyang to win the award.

The vote was decided by the technical directors and head coaches of the 56 CAF member associations.

Meanwhile, Morocco global and Borussia Dortmund defender Achraf Hakimi, who won the 2018 African Youth Player of the Year award, failed to make the team.

Salah also beat these two players last year for him to win the player of the year award for the first time in his career.

"My thanks go to my family, my team-mates and my fans and I dedicate this trophy to my homeland, Egypt".

Egypt crushed sole rivals South Africa 16-1 earlier on Tuesday in a CAF executive committee vote in Dakar to decide which country succeeded Cameroon as 2019 Cup of Nations hosts.

South Africa's Chrestinah Thembi Kgatlana was crowned the best in the women's category.

That was the only award Nigeria won as Leicester midfielder Wilfred Ndidi lost the Youth Player of the Year award to Morocco and Borussia Dortmund defender Achraf Hakimi.
