Uber driver pleads guilty to killing six people between rides

A man charged with killing six strangers between picking up rides for Uber has pleaded guilty to murder in southwestern MI.

Dalton submitted his guilty plea while jury selection was taking place in Kalamazoo County court, where he was standing trial this week.

Dalton pleaded guilty to six counts of first-degree pre-meditated murder, two counts of assault with intent to commit murder and an additional eight counts of felony firearm.

Dalton, who had an Uber score of 4.73 out of 5 before the killing spree, picked up passengers in between shootings at three locations near Kalamazoo, Michigan in February of 2016, including a Kia dealership and a Cracker Barrel.

Dalton claimed the app made him go on his shooting spree, according to documents obtained by The Los Angeles Times.

Carole Dalton told investigators she was stumped by what her husband said. Police said he fatally shot four people outside a restaurant and a father and son at a vehicle dealership in between driving people for Uber, while two people survived the shootings.

Jason Dalton faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison with no chance for parole.

Vazquez clipped the post with a looping cross but that was not enough to hush the angry whistles at the end of the half. La Real could have sealed it too as Oyarzabal fired over from close range and the weaving Januzaj twice went close.

Dalton remained quiet in court and only spoke when he was asked questions.

Dalton's defense attorney, Eusebio Solis, stated that he advised his client to plead not guilty but that Dalton insisted he wanted to spare families from more grief during the trial.

"He either shook his head or said no, and I said, 'Are you sure?' " Derek continued. Dalton was deemed competent to stand trial and he recently dropped an insanity plea, according to the Associated Press.

Dalton reportedly had told police that he was made a "puppet" by the Uber application, which directed him to shoot people at random over the course of several hours. He also described something "like an artificial presence", the report said.

"I don't know whether there will ever be a satisfactory answer as to why he did it ... the "why" question is one that haunts us", Getting said, CNN reported.

Dalton had been picking up riders as an Uber driver on February 20, the day of the shootings.

"But in speaking to Mr Dalton, there are reasons" for the plea, Solis told Judge Alexander Lipsey.
