Democratic Congresswoman Accuses Anti-BDS Lawmakers of Forgetting 'What Country They Represent'

House Democrats passed a bill to reopen the IRS and Treasury Department, pressuring Republicans to break from President Donald Trump and end the partial government shutdown without funding the president's $5.7 billion request for a border wall.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) failed in his first significant legislative test of 2019, on January 8, coming up three votes short of the 60 needed to take up debate on Middle East policy proposals instead of Democratic bills to end the government shutdown.

Senator Bob Menendez, a Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, said the bill "will come back and it will have very strong bipartisan support".

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy questioned Rubio's assertion that Democrats voted against moving forward with the bill due to a "significant [number] of Senate Democrats [who] now support BDS" and that the party's leaders "want to avoid a floor vote that reveals that". Although conservative allies of the president are urging him to declare a national emergency to build his proposed border wall with military funding, he isn't expected to do that in his remarks.

TRT World spoke to Ahmed Rehab, Executive Director of the Chicago chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations, to understand why Republicans chose to introduce this bill now.

With negotiations to end the shutdown at an impasse, Democrats have pledged to continue voting on individual appropriations bills - with votes on two more appropriations bills Thursday covering Agriculture and Interior appropriations.

The Jewish Democratic Council of America supported the Senate Democrats on the vote, tweeting shortly after that they are "right to insist on reopening the government and ending the #Trumpshutdown". Marco Rubio, are a measure that would provide for a new round of sanctions targeting Syria and language that is getting the most attention because it would seek to thwart efforts to promote boycotts and disinvestment from Israel.

Donald Trump demands $5.7 billion for steel barrier on US-Mexico border
Moreover, recent academic scholarship highlights that states with more undocumented immigrants decisively have less violent crime. The president has been saying there's a "crisis" at the border practically since he first started campaigning for president.

"This is the mentality of these people: They hate Israel", she says bluntly.

In support of Israel, Rubio's bills would affirm the legal authority of state and local governments to restrict contracts and take other actions against those "engaged in BDS conduct".

"Ordering a federal employee to work without timely pay is morally wrong and runs counter to every economic principle on which a free enterprise system is based", Brooks said.

While President Donald Trump and Democratic leaders continue to blame one another for the government shutdown, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has been relatively quiet.

Trump has been making a public case that there is a "crisis" at the southern border.

President Trump is slowly running out of border wall options.

Senators got the sense on Wednesday that Trump will fight for the wall indefinitely. All Democrats voted for the legislation. Democrats in turn accused Republicans of trying to use the BDS measure to divide moderate and liberal Democrats. "I hope that my Democratic colleagues don't pile on even more pointless obstruction".
