Samsung ushers in the era of the 1TB smartphone

In a statement, the company said this meant that smartphone users would soon be able to have storage capacity similar to that on a premium laptop, with no need to add memory cards to their phones.

The storage chips will be able to save and load files faster than the company's current chips and will be nearly double the size of its current largest.

The announcement of the 1TB UFS smartphone storage comes few weeks before the company's "Galaxy Unpacked" event that is scheduled to take place on February 20 in San Francisco, US. Samsung's new storage chip can hold 260 videos of the same size.

South Korean tech giant Samsung is declaring war on smartphone storage limitations, announcing the mass production of a new, massive 1 terabyte memory drive for smartphones. With a 1,000 megabyte per second sequential read speed, the new 1 TB eUFS is twice as fast as a regular SSD and significantly faster than the previous 512 GB model. Samsung says it's now planning to put an end to that with a whole terabyte of storage space in its next smartphone generation. So, that day is no longer ahead when we will have a phone with 1TB of Internal Storage. That's compared to 13 videos of the same size that can be stored on the 64GB flash storage "widely used in many current high-end smartphones", Samsung says. That's 10 times faster than the speed of typical microSD cards, according to Samsung.

Cheol Choi, executive vice president of memory marketing at Samsung Electronics, said: "The 1TB eUFS is expected to play a key role in driving the next generation of mobile devices".

Samsung has already launched Galaxy Note 9 which has 512GB Internal Storage which can be further expanded up to 1TB. Similarly, the random read speed has gone for a 38 percent improvement to 58,000 IOPS. Samsung says it foresees strong demand from device makers and will expand the production of the component 5 gen V-NAND chips throughout H1 2019 to quench this capacity thirst.
