GM set to begin 4,000 white collar layoffs on Monday

GM is expected to lay off about 4,000 salaried as part of a cost-cutting plan announced in November

General Motors will begin laying off 4,250 salaried workers on Monday as part of the restructuring plans the company announced late a year ago, two Detroit newspapers reported Friday.

About 4,000 General Motors workers are about to lose their jobs.

But on Friday a GM spokesman said the automaker had trimmed about 1,500 contract jobs, meaning about 4,000 more staff jobs will be cut, according to the Detroit Free Press.

The employee said some department leaders have told workers to forego scheduling vacation time in the first two weeks of February, an insinuation that the involuntary cuts will be made at that time. "We are taking action now while the overall economy and job market are strong, increasing the ability of impacted employees to continue to advance in their careers, should they choose to do so".

That said, the largest of the Detroit-based carmakers will, with the latest cuts, have eliminated more than 14,000 jobs in the US and Canada since November.

Most of the employees who will be part of this round of cuts are responsible for components for internal combustion engines and discontinued vehicle models.

The duchess wrote on the bananas, "You are strong" and "You are loved", as well as "You are brave" and "You are special". The journalist told viewers he knew Meghan for about a year and a half while she was working on Suits .

Citing sources within GM, NBC News reported that the automaker had initially sought to reduce its workforce through voluntary buyouts, with the targeted number being 17,700 positions.

GM is also cutting its executive ranks by 25 per cent, and last week laid off three senior people in its Washington office.

GM announced the layoffs in November at the same time it also revealed it also would close four of its plants in the United States and a fifth plant in Canada.

General Motors is now in a realignment period, shuffling around jobs to put more resources towards autonomous cars and away from poor selling vehicles.

GM Canada president Travis Hester has said the future of cars is electric, rather than internal combustion.

In January, Comprehensive Logistics said it would cease operations at its facility in Lordstown that provides logistics and warehousing, a move that impacts about 180 jobs.
