Darren Weir banned for four years after discovery of 'jiggers'

"Mr Weir will not be permitted to participate in the racing industry in any way over the four-year period, including, but not limited to his participation in the training of horses, attending race meetings and licensed premises and deriving any benefit from the industry", Mr Stier said.

A former owner with Weir, Bowman described how jiggers, or electronic apparatus, could give horses a "nasty electric shock" with the "end result anticipated the horse will put on a burst of speed".

"On the basis that Mr McLean advised the stewards that he will contest the charges against him, significant conditions have also been imposed on his operation until such time as the charges have been heard and determined by the RAD Board".

Weir reportedly became emotional as his list of training achievements were read out before the verdict was handed down.

Racing Victoria's lawyer, Jeff Gleeson QC, said someone of Weir's standing, who could not explain why they had jiggers in their possession, required disqualification.

In making a penalty submission on behalf of Weir, Wheelahan said that the leading trainer had cooperated willingly over the past week since his stables were raided.

"The four-year disqualification is appropriate if the board takes into context how much the racing industry has been tarnished in the past week", Gleeson said.

Emery urges Arsenal to improve away form amid criticism
Arsenal are now in sixth position on the Premier League table following their 3-1 defeat against Manchester City over the weekend.

Gleeson said the location of the devices was telling.

"The act of possessing these devices, the circumstances in which they were located and the inevitable media firestorm that followed the discovery of these items, the arrest of Mr Weir all contribute to the establishment of the fact that this was conduct prejudicial to the image of racing".

"Locating these devices in a bedroom also suggests a desire to hide these devices from the stewards".

Melbourne Cup-winning syndicators Australian Bloodstock, arguably the biggest supporter of the Weir empire, has been forced to spread their horses previously trained by the 48-year-old across the country.

Co-accused Jarrod McLean will appear before the RAD Board on four charges relating to a jigger on his property at Yangery.

Most of his 36 Group One winners have come over the past five years as some of the world's biggest and best-known owners flocked to his stable in search of success.
