LG G8 ThinQ to come with 3D selfie camera for face unlock

LG G8 ThinQ

The South Korean electronics giant teamed up with German semiconductor maker Infineon Technologies to introduce time-of-flight (ToF) technology on the LG G8 ThinQ, which will be unveiled in Barcelona during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 later this month, Yonhap news agency reported. LG confirmed the news tonight while simultaneously announcing that it will have a special selfie camera that uses a Time-of-Flight (ToF) image sensor. We've seen LG announcing certain phone features ahead of the actual press event for a phone, so this isn't surprising. Sony, which suppliers camera components to most smartphone manufacturers, had indirectly hinted, that long-range 3D imaging is expected to be a big thing for 2019.

Compared to structured lighting system for 3D facial recognition on Apple iPhones, a ToF sensor is cheaper and easier to manufacture.

The camera in question isn't on the rear of the phone but the front.

Skype Introduces Background Blur Feature for Video Calls
To activate the function, you can pass the mouse pointer over the Skype video button and select " Blur my background ". Bokeh, the effect of blurring of objects around the subject, has become a popular feature in mobile photography.

They explained that while other 3D technology uses complex algorithms to measure an object's distance from the camera, ToF image sensor is more accurate where it captures infrared light that is reflected off the surface.

LG and Infineon's technology is not affected by external light sources and can thus be more consistent recognition in any light level.

The takeaway here is that this REAL3 image sensor provides a "secure verification system without sacrificing camera capabilities". Due to this speed this technology is often used for face recognition and other biometric authentication techniques. "With innovative technology like ToF, the LG G8 ThinQ will be the optimal choice for users in search of a premium smartphone that offers unmatched camera capabilities".
