Woody Allen sues Amazon Studios in wake of renewed molestation allegations

Woody Allen sues Amazon says studio reneged on film deals

Woody Allen has filed a $68 million lawsuit against Amazon Studios for allegedly backing out of a multi-film deal - including the shelving of his completed comedy A Rainy Day in NY - due to reports of alleged sexual abuse by the Oscar-winning filmmaker.

The complaint further alleges that Patel's notice "did not provide any legal or factual basis" for the termination of the deal, and that Amazon's counsel "merely made the vague statement" that Amazon's participation in the deal "became "impracticable" because of "supervening events, including renewed allegations against Mr. Allen, his own controversial comments, and the increasing refusal of top talent to work with or be associated with him in any way, all of which have frustrated the purpose" of the original agreement's terms.

The lawsuit, filed Thursday in federal court in NY, calls Amazon a "technology giant but Hollywood novice".

Allen, 83, has accused the Amazon unit of backing out in June without cause, after allegations had resurfaced that he had in 1992 molested his adopted daughter Dylan Farrow.

"There simply was no legitimate ground for Amazon to renege on its promises", the lawsuit says.

Two great players who on paper we'd be insane not to have them in the team. "They'll find opportunities. We'll find opportunities, but I can't say anything else".

According to the lawsuit, filed Thursday in federal court in New York, Amazon and Allen signed a deal in 2017 committing to at least four films. Allen has steadfastly denied the allegations.

He stated that the deal very clearly outlined Amazon's agreement to "finance the Allen Films, (ii) make minimum guaranteed payments to Gravier totaling between $68 and $73 million, (iii) pay Gravier [Allen's production company] additional amounts based on the success of the Allen Films, and (iv) distribute the Allen Films widely".

In January 2018, Chalamet revealed he donated his entire salary from the film to charities Time's Up, The LGBT Center in NY, and RAINN as he didn't "want to profit from [his] work".

But a few months later, as the #MeToo movement was taking off, Amazon Studio executives met with Allen's reps and discussed the "negative publicity and reputational harm" the company had received over its association with pervy producer Harvey Weinstein and its former head Roy Price, who'd just resigned over sexual harassment allegations - then asked to "push back" the A Rainy Day in NY release to 2019.
